Kaiti Hill is a neat place to go walking/running, a few hard steps and nice views of Gisborne. You can drive there and explore.
I run from Waikanae along the boardwalk and along the harbour over the bridge then cut through the harbour where fishing club wine centre is to get there then do the steps. It’s a good workout. You will have to be fit. No fountains though or toilets up there.

Rere rockslide is cool to go to if you have time. It’s 30/40 mins from Gisborne and amazing. Take boogie boards, or one of those inflatable boats from warehouse with a boogie board placed in the bottom to slide down it.

Wharekopae RoadRere rockslide is cool to go to if you have time. It’s 30/40 mins from Gisborne and amazing. Take boogie boards, or one of those inflatable boats from warehouse with a boogie board placed in the bottom to slide down it.

Makorori is another nice beach 15 mins away and a good place to
spend the day. Awesome for surfers of all abilities. Swimming is good there too. Also the best for walking along if tide isn’t low and high.

A very safe swimming beach and surf club right opposite the Salisbury Airbnb.
The boardwalk is pretty amazing too, takes you to Midway, the pools and also into the city and the other way along the river, harbour. A safe, really nice walk I do often.

A really cool free modern bike park for the kids and toddlers to practice their biking skills. They often have a food caravan their which is reasonably priced and yummy. It is up the road from the Salisbury Airbnb. You could easily cycle down from it.

This is the patrolled area for swimming for those staying at the Wainui Beachfront Airbnb. It is about 400m up the beach from the house. If you are not a confident swimmer I would recommend taking the time to walk down there as Wainui Beach can have a strong undertow at times.

Irish Pub. Good basic food. Pretty much everything. Not flash but it is comfortable and has a good atmosphere. Reasonable prices, you see a lot of families and groups. If you want a booth or table might pay to book one. It’s sometimes pretty busy.

Fish n chips, ice cream, milkshakes, coffee, cafe, dine in dine out, basics, it’s not the best and I’d recommend going into town which is walkable for better food but since its opposite the Salisbury Airbnb, I thought I’d mention it.

A good place for lunch, not large groups (less than 6-7 I’d say as don’t have big tables). Vietnamese pancakes are my go to. It’s walkable from Salisbury Airbnb off the boardwalk.

This place is near the Wainui Beachfront airbnb, walking distance. Its vegan, and quite cool/hip/casual. Coffees, healthy salads, burritos, slices etc. They usually close at 2pm, and run out of the good food well before then, so would plan on going earlier. It is a bit on the pricey side but its nice to enjoy every now and then.

Coffees, healthy salads, burritos, slices etc. They usually close at 2pm, and run out of the good food well before then, so would plan on going earlier. It is a bit on the pricey side but its nice to enjoy every now and then.
They have recently redone this store and its good to stop in on your way out to the Wainui Beachfront Airbnb if you miss the supermarket. It has pretty much everything, good prices and quality, and there is also a great coffee place called Raglan Roast next door during day, and also a Chinese fish and chip shop (they're not bad, I occasionally buy from them, but fish n chips can be quite hit and miss these days so I don't like to recommend any). There is a laundry-mat across the road too, however I've never used it so couldn't say if its good or bad.
Four Square Ideal

As explained there can sometimes be a strong undertow, so I would recommend swimming in front of the surf club 400m up the beach, if you are not confident in the water.
Don't get me wrong, its still a good beach for swimming and its ok to swim in front of the house but just be mindful.
Dogs are allowed on this beach, but take care over late winter, early spring as there can be seals on the beach.
I would try and time my walks during low tide as it comes quite high, otherwise its great to walk/run up Makorori headland which has steps, or one of my favourites, down Wairere over the bridge towards Moana rd, then left onto Lysnar St, and up Scarlys way and Winifred St (A hill, great views) and back again.
