These sea caves formed by erosion of cliffs over millions of years are only accessible at low-to-mid tide. There is no point going at high tide as there is no beach! To access this stretch of coast on Phillip Island's southern edge, you'll need to turn off the main Phillip Island road, between Woolamai and the township of Surf Beach. There is a car park and drop toilet at the base of the wooden stairs which will take you up and over the rugged dunes. Hold onto your hat if it's a windy day! These dunes are home over the warmer months to the impressive short-tailed shearwaters, which travel from as far as Alaska. Once you're on the stunning (but wild) beach, turn left and the caves are less than a kilometre to the east. Take care once you reach the caves. If the surf is up, the caves can quickly flood. Small children should not enter the caves unless the tide is out. The surf along here is also rough, and there are no lifeguards - so best to keep away from the water.

From cowes jetty you can go on some amazing day trips. One of my favs is the whale watching cruise in winter a must do. I have experienced the most amazing whales jumping out of the water right in front of me. Witness the spectacular coastal scenery of Australia on a 4-hour whale watching cruise around Phillip Island. Climb aboard a stylish vessel with a professional guide and scour the sea for sightings of rare wildlife. See thousands of fur seals at Seal Rocks; keep your eyes peeled for rare seabirds like the shy albatross and little penguin; and marvel at dolphins diving out of the water with incredible grace. With luck, enjoy the unforgettable experience of watching humpback whales in their natural environment on this exhilarating cruise.
