Sightseeing

Short ferry ride from Paraparaumu Beach across to the island, which is a haven for native birds and plants. Great talk by local DOC ranger about the history of the island and the birds and wildlife. You can walk to the island summit via a steep trig track or alternatively the less steep main path. https://www.kapitiisland.com/

A wonderful, tranquil place for all ages to walk around in nature, listening to the song of native birds all around, including a kiwi house. There are also regular eel feedings to participate in. The staff are extremely knowledgable. Nga Manu Nature Reserve is a great asset to the area.

Great casual dining restaurant right on the beach. Quick service and tasty food. Go upstairs to Umu bar for great cocktails, spirits (I can vouch for the gin), wine & craft beer.

Great local cafe and restaurant that uses local, in season produce and most of the vegetables on their menu is grown on the premises, out the back. Can't go wrong with the smashed avo on sourdough! Located at Waikanae Beach, which is a pleasant cycle from Paraparaumu Beach via cycle trail - ask us for more info.

Walking tracks

Amazing views of the Kapiti Coast and all the way to the South Island on a good day. It's a steep (lots of steps both up and down) 10km walk from Paekakariki to Pukerua Bay (or vice versa) - moderate level of fitness required. I would recommend walking from Pukerua Bay to Paekakariki, so that you can enjoy a bite to eat at one of the great cafes in Paekakariki. You can walk in either direction and catch the train back to your car, or to wherever you are going.

Beautiful, unique walk among the nikau palms. It's a short walk, but steep! Lots of stairs to climb, but well worth it for the fantastic views from the top. See the whole of Paraparaumu and beyond, as well as the 4 islands on the Kapiti Coast (look out for the 3 smaller islands in front of Kapiti Island). On a nice day, you will see the South Island (Nelson/Marlborough) in the distance and if you're really lucky, you might spot Mt Taranaki or Mt Ruapehu to the north.

Hidden in the hills of Kāpiti is a Kiwi invention that will see you take the controls of your own aircraft that reaches 80km/h. The ride is hard to describe, because there is nothing like it on the planet. The plane, without wings and a large engine on the back, is suspended between a valley by a network of wires. You lie down on the aircraft, get strapped in, then off go. It steers much like a bike, and you're given instructions on how to get maximum speed.
