One of the few places we miss terribly when we're not in the city. Tons of options, inexpensive and quality every time! Yummy salads too, bonus if you want to compliment some of their deep fried corn empanandas.

Daniel Boulud is a rock-star among chefs - and this restaurant has delighted us for 8 years. Plan for an expensive meal, but this is casual fine-dining, so you can pop in for a meal without donning a suit. Super service, knowledgeable and practical sommeliers and a Mediterranean menu that will surprise and delight just about any palate. When the meal is done, don't miss out on the Grapefruit Givre (sp?) - it's a hollowed out frozen grapefruit with grapefruit sorbet topped with a spun sesame halvah... one of the most simple, unique and delcious desserts we've ever tasted.

Tons of fast and delicious food options... and a bit of a hidden gem when you're at the bottom of the park looking for something to eat besides street cart hot dogs or overpriced sit-down restaurants with sub-standard food and service.

Our favorite bar in the neighborhood... Superb (and strong) craft cocktails with yummy bites - brunch, pre-dinner, late dinner, etc. We've never gone and sat down for wait service there, so can't comment - but everyone is very friendly. Sidle up to the bar, take a seat and let one of the skilled, generous and accommodating bartenders take you on an inebriate adventure. Feeling peckish? Their chicken tenders are perfect everytime, and with a side of fries, you might have padding for that 2nd (or 3rd) specialty drink. They also have an excellent scotch, whisky and bourbon selection.

Neighborhoods

Catch a theater show, people-watch in Times Square, walk 5 minutes to Central Park or explore lesser-known eateries down Restaurant Row on 9th Ave. There's a little bit of everything in the Theater District/Hell's Kitchen, and a lot of people, traffic and buzz. The opposite of sleepy neighborhoods like the UES or FiDi (at night), it's the kind of neighborhood that gave birth to the phrase "the city that never sleeps."

Sightseeing

Visit https://nywatertaxi.com/ for more information. On a nice day it's a cheap and fun way to see the city, ferry from Midtown to Brooklyn (and back) or just enjoy a bit of fresh river air. A hidden and sneaky gem if you're in the right neighborhood and willing to walk a couple extra blocks.

Subways are smart, but don't forget to check delays

From our neighborhood (Theater District) it rarely makes sense to hop in a car... we have access to almost every subway line you'd need to get anywhere in the 5 boroughs. That said, downloading the NYC Subway app and/or checking google maps for DELAYS is paramount to making the best out of the system. Understand when and where track work is happening (because it's ALWAYS happening), when and where there are closures and which lines are running on-time. The extra few minutes of research will sometimes save you headaches and delays that end in expensive cab, Uber or Lyft rides.
