Southerners know that the best barbecue comes from run-down shacks in the worst parts of town—so don’t let the location of Daisy May’s BBQ USA, on a desolate stretch of Eleventh Avenue, or its college-town atmosphere deter you: Daisy May’s, despite a few missteps (the pulled pork is overstewed in its own sauce), is the real down-home deal, a masterful barbecue survey. The Kansas City Sweet & Sticky Pork Ribs are meaty and just tender enough, while the creamed corn tastes like ballpark nachos—and that’s a good thing. The sweet tea with mint leaves will make you long for a front porch. Skip the desserts for a side of bourbon peaches, which calls to mind a drunken cobbler.

While tourists bumble into Sbarro looking for a New York slice, pizza aficionados have been busy colonizing this pedigreed newcomer—a collaboration between Kesté’s talented Roberto Caporuscio and his decorated Naples mentor, Antonio Starita. Start with tasty bites like the frittatine (a deep-fried spaghetti cake oozing prosciutto cotto and béchamel sauce), before digging into the stellar wood-fired pies, which range from standards such as the Margherita to more creative constructions like the Rachetta, a racket-shaped pizza with a “handle” made of ricotta-stuffed dough. The main event, however, should be the habit-forming Montanara Starita, which gets a quick dip in the deep fryer before hitting the oven to develop its puffy, golden crust. Topped with tomato sauce, basil and intensely smoky buffalo mozzarella, it’s a worthy new addition to the pantheon of classic New York pies.

Esca is the area’s slickest and most creative choice. Part of the Mario Batali–Joe Bastianich empire, the menu takes a whirl through Southern Italian seaside cooking (spaghetti with lobster). Start with the signature raw antipasti, called crudi, then move on to excellent, shareable pastas such as superfresh grilled fish, lavish Sicilian-style seafood stew, or succulent square-cut maccheroni alla chitarra with sea urchin and crab.

Warm woods and soft lighting evoke a turn-of-the-century general store at this midtown eatery and gourmet emporium. The restaurant, tucked behind the retail shop, suffers from sluggish service, but all is forgiven when tangy Mediterranean spreads—vinegary artichoke dip, hot-pink beet skordalia—hit the table. Resist the urge to make a meal of Kashkaval’s impressive roster of charcuterie; entrées, like heaping plates of savory elephant beans piled over orzo and deep pots of fondue, are not to be missed.

Chef Andy D’Amico (Nice Matin) explores the interplay of French and Italian influences along the Mediterranean at Nizza (Italian for Nice). The sleek, mod space is an ideal pre- or posttheater spot, provided you don’t spend too much time navigating the extensive menu. Sharing a handful of dishes—like socca, a thick chickpea crêpe flavored with sage leaves, and pastas like pansotti triangles filled with herbs and walnuts—is the way to go. Return for dessert when the curtain falls: We liked the buttery chocolate-orange crostada.

French native chef David Malbequi (the Boom Boom Room, BLT Market) helms this seasonal Franco-American restaurant in Hell's Kitchen. Diners can choose from composed entrées, like veal cheek with Meyer lemon spaetzle and black trumpet mushrooms, or slow-baked halibut with a caper vinaigrette, cauliflower puree, sunchokes and grapes. Come dessert, twists on classics—from pastry chef Vivian Wu (Eleven Madison Park, Del Posto)—are available, including a cheesecake with a mango-pineapple salad. To drink there are 150 different wines, available at the stainless-steel–trimmed mahogany bar.

Like a traditional Japanese ramen-ya, this narrow, below-street-level noodle joint is designed for quick meals. Most seats are along a counter, behind which the chefs crisp pork slices with a propane torch and tend to bubbling stockpots. The specialty here is paitan ramen, a creamy soup that’s a chicken-based variation on Hakata, Japan’s famous tonkotsu (pork) broth. The most basic version, the Totto chicken, is a flavorful, opaque soup bobbing with thin, straight noodles and slow-cooked pork ridged with satiny fat. The real winner, however, is the miso ramen, enriched with a scoop of nutty fermented soybean paste and wavy egg noodles. Ramen is generally a feast unto itself, but you can bulk up a meal with sides like char siu mayo don—a mound of rice heaped with more unctuous pork, yuzu-accented mayonnaise and raw sliced scallions.

Chowhounds rhapsodize about both Wondees with an enthusiasm that borders on mania. At the sit-down sibling to the original take-out operation, the food is deliciously authentic—a welcome change from standard satays and noodles. Sake Bar Hagi evokes Tokyo far more than Times Square, starting with the primarily Japanese clientele seated at the long wooden bar, lined with bottles of shochu and topped by a refrigerated case brimming with cold sake. Classic jazz plays softly at the bar, which is flanked by flat-screen TVs. Revelers and the happy-hour crowd sit at nearby wooden tables, munching on skewered bites, small plates, and soups—typical izakaya, or Japanese pub, fare. Less cramped than downtown izakayas like Taisho, Hagi’s is a primo spot to down ice-cold mugs of Sapporo and watch a game. Small, savory dishes abound, like skewers of chicken skin with salt and sticks of grilled bacon-wrapped garlic or asparagus. Many munchies are decidedly Japanese, like the smelt: Each tiny fish is packed with blonde roe and broiled to crispy perfection. Heartier appetites can order a hefty plate of braised pork belly and garlic sprouts; tender pork, bathing in a peppery, pungent sauce, may be midtown’s best prep for Times Square in all its neon extravagance.

Neighborhood veteran Cupcake Café, near the Port Authority Bus Terminal, is a labyrinthine space offering up any number of places to hide with a newspaper and a steaming cup. The twists and turns of this den also are lined with signature cupcakes gathered in vitrines—their Technicolor flowers made from buttercream icing look like so many denizens of a Dutch greenhouse.

You’ll find fusion comfort foods—not all-day breakfast—at this “diner,” a stylish, exuberantly kitschy Hell’s Kitchen favorite. Though tender rings of fried calamari get a North African kick with harissa mayo, juicy fried chicken and waffles is straight-up American. The best reason to visit this upscale Hell’s Kitchen diner is spelled out right there on the awning. The namesake burger, a delicious Franco-American handful, features sweet caramelized onions, Comté cheese and herb-infused aioli. Served with top-notch golden fries, it anchors the sprawling menu—an odd, rarely successful mash-up of big salads, overstuffed sushi rolls, pasta and barbecued ribs. Management didn’t edit, so you’ll have to—stick to the burger and to all-American desserts like the rich and generous caramel-brownie sundae.

The 12-seat location of this café proves that vegan cuisine and comfort food aren't paradoxical terms. Look into the open kitchen, where chefs cook up meatless dishes, like the Midtown Melt (Cajun-spiced seitan, agave guacamole, vegan cheddar and chipotle aioli on rosemary focaccia) and a vegan burger with soy bacon and onion rings. Healthy organic fruit and vegetable juices are blended on site, including the Field of Green, which combines spinach, kale, ginger, lemon, apple, cucumber and parsley.

It's always nice to be able to have an ace in your pocket whenever someone asks you a question such as "can you give me a good restaurant recommendation in the Theater District?" My answer is invariably "Yes...go to Tout Va Bien. It's a little bit of classic NY, it's been there since the '50s, the food is perfectly simple French, you'll get a great mix of patrons, both local and far-flung, and there is usually someone crazy and drunk at the bar. So, just about perfect."

The former Meskerem space relaunched last fall as Meske, and is receiving buzz for having upped the quality of its meals since the reboot. Given that a decade ago, Washington D.C. expats and even people who’d spent time in Ethiopia considered it the most authentic of NYC’s few options, it’s heartening to witness the revival. Decor is bare bones, the service is friendly and you’ll even receive a mini-history lesson in the relationship between Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisines. The filling vegetable combo ($13.95) is available at a discount ($9.50) before 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

When you can’t spare the $250 it takes to dine at Per Se but you really want to live in Thomas Keller’s world, stop by the counter at Bouchon Bakery. For $1.75, you can have a signature Chocolate Bouchon of your very own. It’s two heavenly bites of tender, slightly gooey chocolate cake shaped like a big cork, and it is as rich as it will make you feel while you eat it looking out on Columbus Circle from the third floor seating area of the Time Warner Center. If you want to unload a little more cash, the fresh pastries run in the $3 range, sandwiches go for about $9, and foie gras dog biscuits for your most deserving Labra-puggly-poo-zer will set you back $14. Nice to know Keller hasn’t forgotten those of us with cultivated tastes but slightly less cultivated bank accounts.

Like the name says, and sold by the slice. The Bangladeshi proprietors take steaming pies out of their ovens 24-7, and never without a customer waiting. $1 gets you a slice with cheese; there are additional toppings, but they cost extra and after seeing a slice coated with some slimy gray mushrooms, I’d pay extra to keep them off. For $2.75, you get two slices and a soda. Peak times seem to be around 3 am and the crowd includes cops, EMT workers, Port Authority dispatchers, cab and bus drivers, partygoers, barflies, Covenant House outcasts, the occasional tourist, and crackheads. Beware the crackheads. They might be skinny, but if they have crazy in their eye, let them jump the line. Last winter, one of them slugged me in the mouth as I reached over his slice to get the pepper flakes. There’s an NYPD booth kitty-corner, which is comforting; it’s right next to the Port Authority Police Station, so in the rare instance that things devolve into chaos (generally customers behave and line up in an orderly fashion), count on the iron fist of the law to come down as swiftly and definitively as God’s avenging angels.

Uncle Nick’s has many attributes working in its favor. Its Hell’s Kitchen locale makes it the perfect after-work/preshow meeting spot; it’s a welcome departure from the bevy of restaurants featuring chic “New American” cuisine (i.e., Vinyl parts I and II) that is homogenizing Ninth Avenue; plus it’s the best way to get your Greek fix without schlepping to Astoria. A menu full of hot and cold Greek tapas and entrees (from olives and cheeses to seafood, kebabs, and…a hamburger?) combine with a refreshing Mediterranean wine selection to leave you sated and sedated. (Hint: Go tapas-style and share the culinary wealth; you’ll get better quantity and variety for your money, as the entrées are disappointingly small.) And be sure to satisfy your culinary and pyrotechnic cravings with Saganaki, the ever-popular cheese flambé dish that’s set afire tableside for your dining pleasure... Opa!

Burgers, burgers, BURGERS!!! Island Burger doesn’t have fries on their menu; instead they’ve got the thickest shakes and best selection of specialty burgers that you can find. I have quite the fondness for their Chile Burger—a diner classic, yes, but not when cooked medium rare and paired with sourdough bread and basil-infused chili. My brother ordered the Cowboy Burger, an all-beef patty smothered in BBQ sauce, ranch dressing, and Monterey Jack cheese. For the faint of heart, grilled chicken can be substituted.

It doesn’t get any more underground than the New York City subways, so it’s somehow fitting that this streetwise outfitter is located inside the Port Authority subway station. You’ll find an array of unisex $20 silk-screened tees and $40 hoodies, made exclusively by the store’s namesake label. Most designs are refreshingly minimalist; to wit, one simply says “42nd & Feeling Fine” in cursive, while another features a pair of boxing gloves and the phrase “Local Champion.” Solid zip-up hoodies are adorned with yellow strings and original Grast pin buttons on the chest. There’s also a heavy focus on toys and accessories, with a line of G-Shock watches designed in collaboration with Alife ($150) and Krink ($140); plastic character figurines by Kidrobot ($8); and GoodWood NYC intricate, hand-painted wooden pendants on beaded chains ($60). Before you hop on the train, ditch your tired Apple earbuds and cop a pair of tricked-out DJ-style headphones from Coloud ($40) or Urbanears ($60), available in every solid color of the pastel rainbow.

The Hell's Kitchen location of Universal Gear is making a concerted effort to stock a range of clothing that keeps in tone with the diversity of its surrounding community. Following the decade-long success of its sister store in Chelsea, the small chain of menswear and accessories opened this flagship store in midtown. The urban-industrial interior is kitted out with custom-built furniture: Colorfast tank tops, Retro Brand printed tees, and a small selection of Diesel jeans sit atop shelves made out of refitted torpedo cars. As well as European lines—Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, and Antony Morato—there’s an extensive swimwear selection in the back of the store.

Mujirushi Ryohin, MUJI in Japanese, translates as “no-brand quality goods.” MUJI is based on three core principles, which remain unchanged to this day: 1. Selection of materials 2. Streamlining of processes 3. Simplification of packages MUJI's products, born from an extremely rational manufacturing process, are succinct, but they are not in the minimalist style. That is, they are like empty vessels. Simplicity and emptiness yield the ultimate universality, embracing the feelings and thoughts of all people.

Staying true to the rich heritage of denim–and authentic, all-American spirit–Lucky Brand began crafting great-fitting, vintage-inspired jeans in Los Angeles in 1990. Their distinctively Lucky look came from literally putting them through the wringer–ripping, fraying, sanding, patching and washing by hand–to give them true character and soul. Authentic hardware, personalized touches and playful details were then added, and an American legend was born.

The story of New York’s great cathedral mirrors the story of the city itself. Created to affirm the ascendance of religious freedom and tolerance, St. Patrick’s Cathedral was built in the democratic spirit, paid for not only by the contributions of thousands of poor immigrants but also by the largesse of 103 prominent citizens who pledged $1,000 each. St. Patrick’s Cathedral proves the maxim that no generation builds a cathedral. It is rather, a kind of ongoing conversation linking generations past, present and future.

Completed in 1905 and renovated a century later, the circle was designed by William P. Eno – a businessman who pioneered many early innovations in road safety and traffic control – as part of Frederick Law Olmsted's vision for Central Park, which included a "Grand Circle" at the Merchants' Gate, its most important Eighth Avenue entrance. The monument at the center of Columbus Circle, created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo, was erected as part of New York's 1892 commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' landing in the Americas. Constructed with funds raised by Il Progresso, a New York City-based Italian-language newspaper, the monument consists of a marble statue of Columbus atop a 70-foot (21 m) granite rostral column decorated with bronze reliefs representing Columbus' ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. Its pedestal features an angel holding a globe. Renovations to the circle completed in 2005 included new water fountains by WET, of Fountains of Bellagio fame; wooden benches; and plantings encircling the monument. The inner circle measures approximately 36,000 square feet (3,300 m2), and the outer circle is approximately 148,000 square feet (13,700 m2). The redesign, by the Olin Partnership of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the recipient of the 2006 American Society of Landscape Architects’ General Design Award Of Honor. In 2007 Columbus Circle was awarded the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence silver medal.

Sean Kelly Gallery operates according to a more traditional gallery model: Its artist roster includes luminaries Marina Abramović, Antony Gormley, Terence Koh and Kehinde Wiley, whose high-concept and otherwise provocative output demand a pilgrimage. So does the gallery itself. The 22,000-square-foot renovation, designed by architect Toshiko Mori, occupies two floors of a 1914 building overlooking the forthcoming Hudson Yards development.

By far the coolest space at Terminal 5 is unfortunately the only space where you can't hear the music; namely, the roof. It's a great little space that feels like the deck of a ferry ship; who the hell designed it? Would love to know. You can also smoke, get a drink, and buy a hot dog out here, while you wait for the suck-ass opening band to simply Go The Fuck Away. Then head back downstairs and try to get as close to the stage as possible without being an asshole (it's possible, really). Or you can try to score some balcony space if you get there early enough. Biggest problem: the space is long and narrow, with the stage at one end; I like spaces that widen out from the stage much better. It's probably the largest venue I'd consent to see a band these days, unless Zeppelin plays MSG. If that happens, I'm fuckin' THERE, dude.

To perform at the Associated Musicians of Greater New York’s Monday night jazz jam sessions, show up at 322 West 48th Street after 7:00 and sign up on the clipboard to sing or play an instrument (bring your own guitar, horn, or reed). You’ll be called to the stage with other musicians, both budding and seasoned, to show your stuff. The fluorescent-lit room offers some folding chairs and a few black and white photos of Dizzy and Thelonious on the stark, white walls; a dim, smoky jazz hall it is not. But it is a welcoming forum for performers to practice playing before an audience, hone their jamming skills, and be supported by a community of musicians. Feel free to sit and just watch; last Monday I heard vocals of “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Almost Like Being In Love,” and while the quality of the performances, um, varied, the vibe was all upbeat and cool, man. And there’s no charge to be there! Regulars greet each other enthusiastically and mingle in the back of the room where the free coffee is.

Unlike other schools who work on a ‘semester’ or ‘sessions’ schedule, Broadway offers all of their classes a la carte. Even if you purchase a bundle of ten classes, it’s absolutely your prerogative to spend them as you choose. Use them all for ballet or spread them out over different genres. If you want to take a tap class one week, a hip hop class another week, and a jazz class the next, they don’t mind. Classes are categorizedby level of difficulty, so a beginner’s hip-hop class will learn a far simpler routine than an intermediate. The problem is there’s no way to figure out your level until you take a class, so choose wisely.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) is the main gateway for interstate buses into Manhattan in New York City. It is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). Colloquially called the Port Authority, the bus terminal is located in Midtown at 625 Eighth Avenue between 40th Street and 42nd Street, one block east of the Lincoln Tunnel and one block west of Times Square. The PABT, opened in 1950 between 8th and 9th Avenues and 40th and 41st Streets, was built to consolidate the many different private terminals spread across Midtown Manhattan. A second wing extending to 42nd Street was added in 1979. It is one of three bus terminals operated by the PANYNJ, the others being the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Upper Manhattan and the Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City. PABT serves as a terminus and departure point for commuter routes, as well as for long-distance intercity routes, and is a major transit hub for New Jerseyans. The terminal is the largest in the United States and the busiest in the world by volume of traffic, serving about 8,000 buses and 225,000 people on an average weekday and more than 65 million people a year. It has 223 departure gates and 1,250 car parking spaces, as well as commercial and retail space. In 2011, there were more than 2.263 million bus departures from the terminal. The terminal has reached peak hour capacity, leading to congestion and overflow on local streets. As it does not allow for layover parking, buses are required to use local streets or lots, or return through the tunnel empty. The PANYNJ has been unsuccessful in its attempts to expand passenger facilities through public private partnership and in 2011 delayed construction of a bus depot annex citing budgetary constraints. In June 2013, it commissioned an 18-month study that would consider reconfiguration, expansion, and replacement options.

Tony Luke’s has long been considered a favorite in Philly for cheese steaks. This new hole-in-the-wall location just west of Times Square brings that taste to New York, sans the “how it’s supposed to be eaten” snobbery. At Tony Luke’s you can have your pick of provolone (sharp or mild), white American, or classic Cheez Whiz without any fear of ridicule. Then get ready to take your meal to go; the restaurant’s décor isn’t something they’ve spent a lot of time on. What they have spent time on is clipping and saving articles from New York magazines raving about their roast pork sandwiches and fries, which are great alternatives if you’re not feeling the cheese steak.
