Sightseeing

This is a beautiful, fairly flat, easy-moderate hike around Killarney lake. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour for most hikers. You can lengthen the hike by starting from another trail through Crippen Park, or continuing on to Mt. Gardner afterwards. Crippen Park is on the bus route, a short walk from the ferry/Snug Cove, or a 30 minute walk from Kiwi Cottage.

Stunning vistas! Cape Roger Curtis ("The Cape") is a favourite place on island, for many--especially for sunset watching. The views look out across the ocean to Vancouver Island, the Pasley Islands, and the Sunshine Coast. There is an easy sea walk along the water, with rocks and tide pools to explore, and more trails through the woods nearby. If you are up for a long hike, you can start at Quarry Park, and follow the trail to Cape Roger Curtis. The Cape is most easily reached by car, or a bit of a walk from the end of the 280 Bus Route.

Opa is a 1000 yr old Douglas Fir tree, located near the entrance of a private retreat property (Xenia) off Mt. Gardner rd. A great place for taking deep breaths and being in awe of nature. The tree ("Opa") is on a part of the property that is accessible to the public, and is a short, flat walk from where you park near the entrance of Xenia. There are benches for sitting below and staring up at this giant, ancient, beauty. Most easily accessed by car.

Get an Experience Card at the Ferry

If you ever plan to take a BC Ferry again, then it is usually worthwhile to load and pay for your trip to Bowen using an Experience card. For one passenger and a car, it saves you about $15 (more passengers, more savings). The Experience Card doesn't cost you anything, but you need to load a minimum amount on it ($95 if you're driving, $55 for walk ons). Whatever you don't spend on your trip to Bowen, can be used to purchase tickets on any other BCFerries route. Only certain ferry routes (like Bowen) get the discount. Just ask for it when you purchase your ticket at the booth.
