Day Trips

Rotorua is an hour and fifteen minute drive from our home and perfect for a day out. Rotorua is an adventure wonderland known for bubbling mud pools, shooting geysers and natural hot springs, as well as having a rich Maori culture. We highly recommend a visit to the Redwood Forest where visitors can walk or bike along the many trails, or try the treetop trails. Take in the stunning lake and volcano scenery, or enjoy a soak in a natural hot stream or at a luxurious spa. While some of the popular attractions can be rather expensive for those travelling on a budget, there is plenty of free stuff to do thanks to nature. Kuirau Park is a thermal park right in the centre of Rotorua with steaming lakes, pools and bubbling mud. Other free activities include the the Redwood Forest, the Wai-O-Tapu Boardwalk, a visit to the Blue and Green Lakes, or a stroll through the beautiful Government Gardens in front of the Rotorua Museum.

The Karangahake Gorge is one of our favourite places to visit. It is steeped in gold mining history and natural beauty, much of it accessible through a variety of walks. Along the way you will encounter old mining relics, swing bridges and and a 1100 m railway tunnel. If you are up to it you can hike, or cycle, the whole length of the gorge, as part of the Hauraki Rail Trail. For those who want something less stressful the popular Windows Walk is a circuit of only 2km beginning with a swing bridge over the Waitawheta River, with windows through the rock wall for views down into the gorge. Conclude your visit with a ride on the Goldfields Historic Railway between Waikino and Waihi .
