Sicilian cuisine and wine experience

Enjoy the typical Sicilian breakfast 😊😊😊 Granita and brioche for breakfast (or whenever there is a good enough excuse) is an unmistakably Sicilian experience, which no visitor should miss the chance to enjoy. I suggest the Jolly Bar on Via Roma 8, Falcone (Me) to taste it. Their granitas are some of the best in the entire region of Messina. Sit back, relax and choose your flavour. The most common ones are coffee with cream, strawberry and lemon.

Cannoli and Arancini!!! Cannoli consist of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta cheese. The dish and the name may originate from the Muslim Emirate of Sicily. Arancini are stuffed rice balls which are coated with bread crumbs and then deep fried. The most common is filled with ragù (meat, slow-cooked at low temperature with tomato sauce and spices), mozzarella cheese and peas. Also this dish are said to have originated in 10th-century Sicily at a time when the island was under Arab rule. I suggest Pasticceria Saporito to have a fantastic culinary experience

Traditional place with sicilian genuine cousins. We suggest to try “Involtini di carne alla messinese” (meat rolls) and Malvasia wine with piparelli (crunchy biscuits with almonds). There is also the opportunity to buy their products there. Trattoria Pane e Vino +39 330 559 933 https://goo.gl/maps/LdpC6BhzG7usm8qi9

Places to see 😉

Ancient Tyndaris was strategically situated on its prominent hill overlooking the wide bay of the Tyrrhenian Sea bounded by the Punta di Milazzo on the east, and the Capo Calavà on the west. It was one of the latest of all the cities in Sicily that could claim a purely Greek origin, having been founded by the elder Dionysius in 396 or 395 BC. Considerable ruins of the ancient city are visible today. It occupied the whole plateau or summit of the hill, and the remains of the ancient walls may be traced, at intervals, all round the brow of the cliffs, except in one part, facing the sea, where the cliff is now quite precipitous. The chief monuments, of which the ruins are still extant within the circuit of the walls, are: -the theatre, of which the remains are in imperfect condition, but sufficient to show that it was not of large size, and apparently of Roman construction, or at least, like that of Tauromenium, rebuilt in Roman times upon the Greek foundations -a propylaeum with two handsome stone arches (previously called a Gymnasium) -several other edifices of Roman times, but of wholly uncertain character, a mosaic pavement and some Roman tombs. Openings Hours: Mon – Sun 9 am – 6:30 pm Via del Teatro Greco, 98066 Tindari Tel. +39 0941 369023

The Marinello Lake Nature Reserve provide a wonderful natural environment Located at the foot of the Tindari promontory, the Marinello Lake nature reserve is one of the most evocative natural environments of the area. The formation of the lagoon goes back 100 years ago but the reserve was created in 1998 by the province of Messina. The reserve is 15 minutes away from the apartment by car and it is nice place where you can enjoy nature and relax 😎

The Milazzo castle is the biggest castle in Sicily and it is covers almost 14.000 square meters! The Milazzo Castle is a fortified building located in the town of Milazzo, just a 30 minute drive from the apartment . Overlooking the town, it has now gained the status of National Monument in Italy. It was actually more of a fortified citadel where the locals used to live in. It was built on an area where the greeks, romans, byzantines and muslims had previously occupied. The first documents tracing back to the castle go back to the Norman period, the 11-12th century, when the main building was constructed, the Mastio, and it was then enlarged from the Swabians. After the Normans, the Aragonese, Spanish and Borboni took over the castle adding modifications to the structure till 1880 when the castle was turned into a prison. Unfortunately the changes that were made while this was used as a Prison ended up damaging the ancient beauty of the original structures in this castle. In 1959 this site was abandoned even from the prison duty and it wasn’t until 1991 that the first projects of restoration started. Since 2010 it is open fore the public to visit. Admission Fee: €5.00 Full/ €2.50 for school groups/ Free for EU children under 10 years of age, EU students and teachers of Arts and Architecture / Free every first Sunday of the month Opening Times: Tuesday to Sunday 9-18:30 Monday closed Address: Salita Castello 18, 98057 Milazzo

Over an hour and 20 drive from the apartment is the lovely town of Taormina with its precious jewel: the impressive greek-roman theatre. The Greek-Roman Theatre of Taormina is one of the treasured marvels in the province of Messina. It is the second largest theatre of greek origins in Sicily – the first is in Syracuse. Built in the 3rd century B.C. from the greeks, it was then modified by the romans. The greeks used stone blocks from Taormina (similar to marble) to build this theatre while the Romans are known for their work of restoration and extension that took almost a decade. The theatre is divided in three parts: the stage, the orchestra and the audience seating. Today you can still see the bases of the columns in the stage area that used to decorate the stage. next to the stage there are two big rooms used from the actors for costume changes and in the lower part of the stage was the musicians area, the orchestra. The audience seating was created on a series of steps going from the stage and up into the hill. Today the theatre can be visited during the day but is also in use with its original function. The Theatre of Taormina is the perfect setting for a relaxed evening of culture overlooking the Sicilian coast! Admission Fee: €8.00 full / €4.00 reduced Opening Times: 9.00-16 or 19 depending on the month Address: Via Teatro Greco, 40, Taormina ME

Isola Bella is a gorgeous pebbled beach which includes an islet of the same name. Isola Bella, known as the Pearl of the Ionian Sea, is considered the most charming and gorgeous beach of the district of Messina. Placed close at the foot of the town, the bay has a pebbled beach, but the most important attraction is the islet of the same name located in front of the beach characterised by a lush vegetation. The islet is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of beach which is covered by water at high tide. Water is blue and clear, full of spectacular marine flora and a fascinating seabed.

The Montalbano Elicona Castle is considered as one of the most beautiful monuments in Sicily. The Montalbano Elicona Castle was built in the 12th century by the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II on preexisting byzantine and Arab walls. The intent of Frederick II was to provide Sicily a series of strong defensive buildings around the island. The well preserved extensive walls of the castle are easily seen throughout the town. From on top of the Valley the King could control the whole area and the nearby Nebrodi Mountains. The small medieval winding roads lead up to this charming castle that was home to many kings and nobles like Luis King of Sicily and Frederick the Simple. The ongoing restoration work in progress closes up some areas of this site but it is still well worth a visit. Interesting are the rooms with armours on display and the small museum with musical instruments. The Royal Chapel of the Byzantine era is truly impressive! Apparently Arnaldo da Villanova was buried here, a famous character connected to this castle who died in 1313 in genoa and was a doctor, alchemist and a religious writer of great influence in the european courts. Located about 1 hour and 20 by car from the apartment, Cefalù is a beautiful city by the sea, very characteristic from the limestone buildings, closely build near the sea. Things to do in Cefalu -Visit the Duomo: Cefalu’s double towered Cathedral is at the heart of the city center and no trip to the town is complete without stopping to admire it. The pretty facade adorns many a postcard but you should step inside to ogle the Byzantine mosaics. And those columns in there? They were probably stolen and repurposed from the Tempio di Diana. After paying your respects to the historic church, grab a table in the piazza and order a coffee in order to soak up the Cefalu atmosphere. The cathedral in Cefalu, Italy -Climb La Rocca: This craggy mountaintop towers over the pretty town and it was once the site of a Norman castle. The castle was built in 1061 so only the ruins remain but it is the historic landmark that Cefalu is best known for. Be prepared for plenty of stairs – you will have to follow the Salita Saraceni over three layers of city walls to reach the top. -Take a photo from the molo: That classic picture of the beach and buildings of Cefalu which makes it seem like the photographer snapped the shot from the deck of a boat? It is actually taken in a small cove in the historic center. You will find it if you follow Via Bordonaro to the very end. Walking along the seawall will give you an even higher vantage point to take a photo across the pretty water. Walk along the promenade: There is a free beach in Cefalu where you can lay out a towel without having to pay to rent a lounge chair. Stepping into the sea is a pleasure, but so is joining all of the locals on a passeggiata, or evening walk, along the seafront promenade.

Coming back from Cefalù make a stop on Santo Stefano di Camastra for its fantastic Sicilian ceramics. Along the road you will find numerous shops with attached factory that expose the colorful artifacts: plates, cups, jugs, carafes, pots, friezes, objects of various kinds, tiles. All decorated with typical Sicilian paintings taken from the ancient tradition of the island to paint the Sicilian cart, now famous all over the world.

Rising out of the cobalt-blue seas off Sicily's northeastern coast, the Unesco-protected Aeolian Islands (Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi) are a little piece of paradise, a seven-island archipelago offering a wealth of opportunities for relaxation and outdoor fun. Stunning waters provide sport for swimmers, sailors, kayakers and divers, while trekkers can climb hissing volcanoes and gourmets can sip honey-sweet Malvasia wine. The car is the best way to visit Sicily

I strongly suggest to rent a car to get the chance to move freely on my beautiful island. You could find a car rental at Catania airport or at Milazzo port.
