Coniston is a peaceful small village 12 miles away from Windermere. It's a great place to escape from city life and avoid busy touristic places. I'll leave some tips and favourite places on my guidebook - please refer to it and enjoy the stay in Shepherds Villa!! :)

This tranquil and peaceful lake locates 1 mile away from the village of Coniston and approx. 10 miles away from Windermere. Although it's the fifth-largest lake in the Lake District, it's not as busy as Windermere Lake. So, you'll be able to enjoy the quiet, beautiful nature by walking along the river, or round-lake trip by lovely-old-school steamboat or you can even hire a boat for some exploration.
コニストン・ウォーターはコニストンの街から0.6マイル程の場所に位置している湖です。湖水地方にある湖のなかで体積では3番目・面積では5番目に大きく、南北に細長い形をしています。

Coniston Water

The Old Man of Coniston
Iconic mountain The Old Man of Coniston attracts a lot of hikers and local people. You can see the village of Coniston, Coniston Water and even the sea if the weather is good.
コニストンにあるいちばん有名な山、それがオールドマン・オブ・コニストンThe Old Man of Conistonです。縮めてThe Old Manと呼ばれるほど地元の人々に愛されている山です。この山はスレートと呼ばれる平べったい岩石からなり、登山道じゅうに見ることができます。
頂上からは真下にあるコニストンの村やコニストン・ウォーターだけでなく、天気が良ければ湖水地方を見渡すことができます。ここから尾根伝いに他の山に縦走することもでき、気軽なトレッキングから本格的な登山まで楽しむことができます。
Tarn Hows is a large artificial lake placed in the middle of Coniston and Ambleside. You can walk around the lake even without proper mountain shoes because the walking route is well maintained. This circular route is just for 2 miles (1 hour), and you can see the lake from a different angle while feeling nature. This is a dog-friendly route, so if you are a dog person, it will be really satisfying too!

Tarn Hows
Tarn Hows is a large artificial lake placed in the middle of Coniston and Ambleside. You can walk around the lake even without proper mountain shoes because the walking route is well maintained. This is a very relaxing, gorgeous steamboat tour. This steamboat has been used since 1859, and it has two luxury decorated rooms.
The engine is very quiet, and the boat moves so smooth, so you won't notice the departure for a while!
You can have a look into the engine room and see how it's working. It is so satisfying to look up the smoke from the chimney, too.
This service only runs from end of March to end of October, so better you check the website before you visit.

Lake RoadThis is a very relaxing, gorgeous steamboat tour. This steamboat has been used since 1859, and it has two luxury decorated rooms.

It says Indian restaurant, but they are more like a fusion of Indian & Bangladeshi & other Asian cuisines (they also have fish & chips, spaghetti & so on) Delicious curry, naan and dal. You should try curry with the extra hot mark; IT IS super hot, but it's not just hot - it's pleasant hot.
They open from 5:30pm to 11pm every day, and they do takeaway as well. Please don't forget to prepare some cash as they only accept cash payment!

Coniston grew as both a farming village and to serve local copper and slate mines. On the other hand, Hawkshead grew to be an important wool market in medieval times and later as a market town (to be honest: I copied & pasted from Wikipedia so it might be wrong).
There are labyrinthine alleys among beautiful white houses as well as Victorian stone houses. You can visit Beatrix Potter gallery in the centre of the village, and National Trust shop is just around the corner. You'll be able to find many artisan shops too.

Honest Shop - 無人販売所
日本でもよく見かける無人販売所ですが、ここイギリスにもその文化は存在します！その名もHonest Shop…正直なお店、と直訳できます。仕組みは簡単で、購入したい品物の番号を店内入口付近のノートに記入してお金を箱に入れるだけ。
お店は村役場の一角にあり、ハンドメイドグッズや手作りのジャム・ピクルス、手編みのマフラーなど様々です。歩いていてHonest Shopの文字を見かけたら、ぜひ立ち寄ってみてください。

湖水地方の羊・ハードウィック種
湖水地方には本当に沢山の羊がいます。白、黒、灰色、ぶち、まだら…その中でももっとも「湖水地方らしい」羊というのが、ハードウィック種の羊です。
ハードウィック種の羊は「ピーター・ラビット」の作者、ビアトリクス・ポターが熱心に保護と育成を進めたことでも知られており、灰色のもこもことした毛と白い顔が特徴的です。ふかふかと柔らかそうに見えるこの羊毛ですが実際はゴワゴワと固く、そのためカーペット用として加工されるのが主流となっています。
余談ですが、羊たちをよく見るとスプレーで落書きされたように色がついていることがあります。これはいたずらでもなんでもなく、羊の飼い主が自分の羊を見分けるためにつけるマークなんだそうです。色が違っていたり、模様が違っていたり…羊の種類だけでなく、このマークも色々と見比べてみてくださいね。

Coniston 14 - 🎉 Annual Road Race in March🏃♀️🏃♂️
Coniston holds a road race called Coniston 14 every year. It is Coniston’s largest annual community event and is organised by an enthusiastic committee of volunteers from the village.
The race starts and ends at John Ruskin school and Playing field. Every year, about 1600 runners come to run the beautiful scenic route around Coniston Water.
In 2020, it will be held on Saturday 21st March. You may be affected by the race by a road closure or some occasional congestion, but if you are interested in cheering runners, it will be a fun time. IF you are a runner, why not join the race!? :)

Smit - ID for Sheep!? 🐏🐑
In Coniston, you're able to see a lot of sheep everywhere. And sometimes, sheep look free; almost like a wild. But how can the owner of the sheep recognise his/her flock from others?
So, here's the solution: a special colour mark called "smit" is used for the purpose. Sheep farmers use a mixture of pigments and grease or a similar thing (so that it doesn't come off in the continuous rain or with an expose of the sunshine), and they put it on the fur of their sheep. With different combinations of colour, shape and place to put smit, it's easy to recognise which sheep belong to whom. How clever!

コニストン水道事情🚰 - 硬い？軟らかい？
海外旅行をする時に気になる「水道水をそのまま飲んでも大丈夫なのか？」問題。イギリスでも、ロンドンやイギリス南部の地域では水道水といえば硬水、お湯を沸かせばヤカンに白い汚れがつき、そのまま飲んだら変な味…とある意味有名（？）なのですが、イギリス中部・北部では水道水は軟水で、湖水地方もその例に漏れません。
コニストンの水道は、オールド・マン・オブ・コニストンから少し離れた山の中腹にある湖、レバーズ・ウォーターLevers Waterから引かれてきた天然水で、水道の水をそのまま飲んでも問題ありません。湖水地方の自然を感じながら、ゴクゴクどうぞ！

🍎Grocery stores in Coniston🥓 - Co-op, Spar and Hutchinson
There are three grocery stores in Coniston: Co-op, Spar and Hutchinson.
The co-op has all the essential stuff you need, from fresh vegetable and fruit to shampoo and dog-food.
Spar also has a load of things and opens more extended hour. It's located in a gas station, and it holds Post Office as well.
Hutchinson is a family-owned grocery store/butcher, and they make beautiful bacon and sausages. They have a huge section of the local speciality, like chutney, jam, fudges and pâté. If you are an eco-conscious person, this shop also helps to avoid excess plastic when you buy vegetable and fruit.

🥓ローカルなスーパーに行ってみよう🥩
コニストンには3つのスーパーがあります。Co-op、ガソリンスタンドに併設のSpar、そして個人経営店のHutchinsonです。それぞれに特色はありますが、オススメは個人経営のHutchinson！野菜や果物、缶詰などの食料品はもちろん、地元で作られたジャムやソース、お菓子の品揃えが豊富で地域の食文化が垣間見えます。また店内奥には精肉コーナーがあり、店手作りのベーコンやソーセージを購入することができます。中でもオススメは大きな渦巻が特徴のSpiced Cumbrian Sausage！通常のものと比べ、スパイス入りはぴりりと辛くハーブもたっぷり含んでいるので香りが豊か。ぜひ地元の味を試してみて下さい。
