Food scene

A few ideas for restaurants while you are in our city.
Barracks Row has tons of great food options. Our favorites are Matchbox, Ted’s Bulletin and Lavanga. All three are family friendly casual dining with really good food. Matchbox has great pizza and salads. Ted's is a stepped up diner famous for homemade poptarts and adult milkshakes. Lavagna is a rustic Italian restaurant. http://www.barracksrow.org/on-the-row/restaurants

Neighborhoods

This our corner of the city located on the eastern side of Capitol Hill in a residential neighborhood just one and half miles from the Supreme Court and U.S. Capitol. As you may know the U.S. Capitol overlooks the National Mall, a grassy area centered around the Washington Monument and stretching to the Lincoln Memorial. The Smithsonian Museums surround the Mall. Also adjacent to the Mall is the White House, Jefferson Memorial, U.S. Mint and many federal buildings. You can reach the Capitol by foot (30 minutes) or Uber (under 10 minutes), but many visitors use the subway system, called the Metro. The Stadium Armory metro stop is about six blocks away (less than 10 minutes walk) and is on the blue/orange/silver line which takes you directly to the Capitol (Capitol South stop), Museums (Smithsonian stop) and the White House (Metro Centers stop). Of course the Metro will also take you to virtually any other location you hope to visit. There is also a bus stop one block away where you can catch the bus to the historic Union Station located right next to the U.S. Capitol. From Union Station you can walk to the Mall, get the metro, even take a train to any Amtrak stop on the Eastern Seaboard. Some guests use the "Circulator" bus which runs a loop right around the Mall. You can buy a daily pass for a few dollars at Union Station to hop on and off the Circulator throughout the day. One of the main attractions in our neighborhood is Eastern Market, a historic market where you can buy cheese, bread, pastries, meats and flowers Tuesday through Sunday. On the weekends there is an outdoor market where vendors offer handmade, unique and vintage items. For more grocery options there is a Trader Joe's. You will also find coffee shops, and restaurants at Eastern Market and Barrack's Row. Barrack's Row is right next to Eastern Market and hosts a historic Marine Barracks still in use today, but has become the home of a number of excellent restaurants. Eastern Market is a less than 20 minute walk or can be reached by Uber or metro.

My best tip for D.C. travel is to contact your Member of Congress or Senator (just call the number on their website for the Washington Office) and ask for a tour of the Capitol and any other tours they can set up for you. White House Tours are hard to get, but your Member of Congress is the one to ask for help with that. (It doesn’t matter which party they are.). They may also be able to help with other hard to get tours like the Supreme Court and Library of Congress. The Smithsonians are free and do not require reservations. Lastly, the monuments are beautiful at night.
