Beach

A great swimming option if you are short on time or don’t want to commit to a beach by boat or hike. Spilia is located in the port, with platforms and ladders to access the sea. There are no showers or bathrooms, but there are cafes and restaurants nearby. Great if you like jumping/diving off rocks!

Beach option. Can get there by boat, or walking along the seawall (40 mins). Umbrella and chair rentals come with towels. There's a bar and restaurant, showers and change rooms on the beach. The beach is sandy, with a gradual decline.

Beautiful beach in a cove. Great as a day-trip for a different beach experience as you can only reach it by boat. Boat is a round-trip cost of about 15 EUR, and two chairs and an umbrella are about 10EUR. You need to bring your own towels... and there is a beach bar, but with limited options. We often pack water, snacks, but also purchase cold drinks from the stand. There are no showers or washrooms. Make sure you check the boat times -- you'll know when the last boat leaves (around 5pm?) as the entire beach will clear out :) The boat is a nice way to see the views of the island as well! It stops at Bisti Beach, which you can check out as another beach day option.

Not quite a beach, but more of a swimming area with platforms, very close to the port. Take the sea wall path towards Kamini, and you'll find a set of stairs near the restaurant Techne, that leads you down to the concrete platforms and water. A different swimming experience -- great if you're looking for a quick dip.

Food scene

Fantastic Italian restaurant for dinner - great ambiance and decor. Cozy, romantic, not in the port and cat-free.

Cute patio, great views of the sea. Quiet, romantic, cozy and not in the port. They do a modern takes on food -- bit different than a lot of the traditional Greek options in the port.

Great cafe to people watch, especially those getting off the ferry. They tend to have wine specials and happy hours (ask for details). Wifi, clean bathrooms and great staff. Pizza's here are actually pretty good (if you need a break from Greek food!).

Fish/Seafood restaurant, with the blue chairs! Great, simple restaurant, for fresh seafood. We once sat across from John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, who were eating there, singing to the cats, on their honeymoon!

Casual restaurant, across from the seafood restaurant with the blue chairs. Technically called Kai Kremmidi. We love getting Pita Gyros to go (inexpensive meal or snack), but also have had full meals here.

Classic Hydra Greek restaurant. Oldest tavern, known for where Leonard Cohen was photographed by this famous tree. Great for groups, and for a meal off the port.

After our terraces, the second best place to watch the sunset. Great for a drink after a day at the beach, or before you head out for dinner.

If you are looking for an activity - try horseback riding! Suggest going up to the monastery for an option that isn't the beach.

Great place for drinks, a little off the port. Music, stays open late, often there is dancing at some point in the night. Mostly patio seating, but there's also inside space.

Footwear to bring

- flats (heels are challenging on the cobble stones and up and down steps, especially from our house) - runners/hiking boots (the island is hilly, there are lots of steps and the stones can be slippery -- especially in the rain) - wetshoes (for the very pebbly beaches)

Meal times

Lunch is normally around 13:00-15:00. Drinks/aperos are around 18:00-20:00 (to watch the sunset!) Most restaurants don't open for dinner until at least 19:00. Locals tend to eat dinner around 22:00. Check shop hours - off peak season, some places are closed on Sundays, or have limited hours, and most shops take a mid day siesta, but stay open late.
