The first thing you’ll see at Parrot Mountain is a large, 200 foot, stacked stone fence. As you make your way down the path, you’ll find parrot cottages and tropical birds. Once you enter the Secret Garden, you’ll see toucans, hornbills and more flying freely. The Bird Garden is your next stop. You’ll see over 50 birds to feed and have pictures made with. Of course, you can just walk around and look at all of the birds, but this is the spot where you can get up close to any of the birds! There is also a baby bird nursery to visit where you can pet the babies and watch them be hand-fed. If you’re interested in purchasing a bird to take home, you can choose one from the nursery. Parrot Mountain and Gardens also has beautiful landscaping, including a waterfall, beautiful flowers and plants and benches for relaxing.

Everyone knows the name Titanic! Everyone knows Titanic struck and iceberg! And everyone knows Titanic was lost! She sat at the bottom of the ocean for 75 years before they found her in 1985. A second expedition to the wreck site went out in 1986 and that expedition was co-led by the owner of this museum. The artifacts you see throughout the ship are REAL and valued at over $4 million dollars. You'll be able to touch a growing iceberg, experience the 28 degree water, try and steer the ship and pay tribute to the 2,208 passengers and crew that were on the Titanic. You will enter as a guest and leave as a Titanic Passenger!

The Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction in Pigeon Forge, which initially opened in 1988, is the first of three locations currently featuring Dolly Parton’s famous show. The dinner attraction features 32 highly trained horses, dozens of cast members, pyrotechnics, special effects, brief lumberjack competition, pig races, ostrich races, and much more! Since the entire show is centered around a friendly competition between the North and the South, you will be competing with your friends on the other side of the arena. The show is very entertaining and some of the spectacular horse stunts seemed like a combination of a rodeo and Blue Angles airshow presentation. In addition to the main show, Dixie Stampede has a pre-show that starts approximately 50 minutes prior to the ticketed showtime. The pre-show entertainment, which is in the Dixie Belle Saloon, features a talented Bluegrass and Country band, Mountain Ruckus. During the pre-show, guests can purchase souvenir boot cups (filled with soda) and various snacks. Trust me on this — don’t purchase the overpriced popcorn or peanuts. Once you see the huge portions they feed you during the show, you will thank me. After watching the servers juggle trays of hot soup and pitchers of drinks, I would not be surprised to see Dixie Stampede table serving become an Olympic sport. It was quite impressive to watch the servers feed the masses assembly-line style and keep hundreds of mason jars filled. The servers use a system to make sure the glasses are always filled with the appropriate beverage – after the initial drink order, the server did not have to ask anyone on our entire row what they were drinking. The servers work for tips and the Dixie Stampede announcer suggests visitors tip 15% of the total ticket price (bring cash). The quality of the food was surprisingly good and vegetarian meals are available upon request. Due to the number of people being served, I was expecting the food to be low-quality, but it far exceeded my expectations. The meal, which is served without utensils, includes creamy vegetable soup, an entire rotisserie chicken, smoked pork loin, homemade biscuits, corn-on-the-cob, potatoes, and fried apple turnover. The four-course meal included and more calories than any human should consume in one sitting and is one of the best dinner show meals in the area. Although Dolly Parton does not normally make an appearance, a music video of her singing Color Me America along and the cast performing is the grand finale.

Each ride, which lasts eight to ten minutes, is made up of four complete revolutions of the wheel. During the ride visitors have aerial views of the surrounding mountains and the most visited National Park in the country. Each Gondola has eight seats, but the maximum weight limit of 1,320 pounds allows for approximately six adults. Since the gondola walls are made up of glass, the views are excellent from every seat. The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel has a total of 42 climate-controlled gondolas and operates continuously between 10 AM and 12 AM each day. Insider Tips: For $3 extra you can upgrade your single-use ticket to include one daytime ride (before 5 PM) and one night ride (after 5 PM). The nighttime experience provides unmatched views of Pigeon Forge and the light show brilliantly illuminates the wheel!

A swashbuckling good time awaits at Pirates Voyage. This unforgettable attraction brings the excitement of the sea to the heart of the Smoky Mountains. One of many local dinner theaters owned by Dolly Parton, this piratey show captures the whimsy of Dollywood’s best spectacles while also adding new elements of excitement. As a dinner show, it provides a feast for all of the senses. You’ll enjoy the acrobatics, the intricate set, and the music, of course, but also a four-course feast including several of your favorite dishes. Insider Tips: -While the show is definitely designed to keep kids entertained, it could prove problematic for young children who are easily frightened. In particular, they may be startled by occasional loud explosions. -You’ll receive plenty of food throughout the show, but beware: it won’t all arrive at once. Rather, the show takes an incremental approach, with one item served at a time. This isn’t a problem for most viewers, however, and may actually encourage you to pace yourself and truly enjoy each aspect of the meal.

If you like your comedy served up in a barn, love the American flag, appreciate a nice pair of overalls, and have a hankering to see country folk smacking each other upside the head with fake corn on the cob, then you won’t want to miss The Comedy Barn in Pigeon Forge. This comedy show has been crackin’ jokes and showing off their barnyard animals for more than a decade, so they must be doing something right! Insider Tips: If you are part of a large group, make sure to tell The Comedy Barn staff who the group leader is. This will increase the chance of your group’s leader being brought up on stage!

WonderWorks, which is located inside a humongous upside-down building, is one of the most popular attractions in Pigeon Forge and the Smoky Mountains. The WonderWorks attraction is a combination of a science fair, amusement park, and children’s museum all rolled up into one huge experience. The admission price includes access to over 150 activities ranging from roller coaster simulators to black light ropes courses. In my opinion, the wide appeal of the WonderWorks exhibits is the strongest reason to visit. WonderWorks simultaneously entertains young children, teenagers, and adults – the plentiful attractions are truly fun for people of all ages! Depending on the crowds and how many exhibits your party decides to interact with, the experience should take between two and four hours. Some of the attractions and exhibits include: Inversion Tunnel – As you enter the WonderWorks experience, you will pass through an inversion tunnel. Hang on to the rails – the combination of the colors, patterns, and circular motion will make you feel like you are upside down. Xtreme 360 – Imagine a pedal-powered, upside-down carnival ride. The speed at which you pedal determines the rate of your upside-down revolutions. Hurricane Simulator – Step into this small room to see what a 65 mile per hour wind feels like. Don’t worry you don’t get wet. The word hurricane is a little misleading – this is nothing more than a low-speed wind tunnel. Bed of Nails – See what it feels like to lay down on a bed made out of 3,497 nails! Don’t worry it won’t hurt a bit. Climbing Wall – The rock climbing wall, which is a beginner level, is a fun physical challenge for everyone. Race a friend or family member to the top and earn bragging rights. Wonder Coaster – This multiple-axis virtual roller coaster will take you through seemingly endless loops and rolls. The coaster has a full 360 degrees of pitch and roll that is sure to get your adrenaline pumping! Ropes Course – The indoor ropes course, which is the largest in the world, is over 50 feet tall! The course is sure to please adrenaline junkies and families alike. As you climb 4 stories of rope, you will cross tremor bridges, swinging beams, and experience over 50 obstacles. Due to the black lights, the entire course has a psychedelic atmosphere. In my opinion, the ropes course is the best attraction at WonderWorks Pigeon Forge. The above list is just a small sampling of the 150+ exhibits and attractions at WonderWorks Pigeon Forge.

If you’re looking for a show that really puts the spangled in star-spangled, you won’t want to miss Country Tonite Pigeon Forge! This country song and dance fest delivers so much flash and glamor that it’s hard to know where to look during the two-hour, country music extravaganza. By the intermission, my eyes were burning from bedazzle overload and processing the continual costume changes! The multi-million dollar theater itself is enough to make your head spin, too. With room for 1,500, there’s really not a bad seat to be had. The show featured a range of country songs, from classic oldies to newer hits, as well as some bluegrass, countrified remakes of top 40 — bluegrass cover of “All the Single Ladies” comes to mind — and gospel. Then, of course, there was Bubba the Redneck Range, there ostensibly to contribute to the comic relief portion of the show…. Just keep in mind that it almost takes more talent to sing “badly.” Country Tonite Pigeon Forge may be all about the country music, but it also features some serious dancing, from cloggin’ to the Texas two-step and even some country breakdancing, which I didn’t even know was a thing until I saw this show. You just haven’t lived until you’ve seen a guy in tight Wranglers, a fringy shirt and a cowboy hat doing a head spin in front of more than a thousand cheering fans. I can now cross “watch a country-style hip-hop dance performance” off of my bucket list. Insider Tips: To get the best seats, call or stop by the theater a few days before your desired show date. Ask them to let you know the section and row you will be seated in and ask them if there is any way to get a better seat. Since the theater oftentimes holds back some of the best seats for special occasions, make sure to tell them if you are celebrating something special.

Alcatraz East, which is located near The Island in Pigeon Forge, is a fantastic new crime museum that will have crime geeks drooling. The huge, 25,000 square feet museum includes five unique galleries and over 100 interactive exhibits! The design of the Alcatraz East building was modeled after the first prison in the State of Tennessee and Alcatraz. The museum incorporates the castle-like look of the 1898 Tennessee State Prison just outside of Nashville and the watch towers of Alcatraz. A few of our favorite exhibits include: American Crime- Remember O.J Simpson speeding away in the white Ford Bronco? That vehicle and many other famous getaway cars can only be seen at Alcatraz East. There are plentiful artifacts and souvenirs including guns, papers, vehicles and more that remind us of some of the most famous criminals in our country’s history. Punishment- Want to hang out in a jail cell for the afternoon? Now, you have your chance to get behind bars! Spend some time getting your mug shot taken, take a lie detector test, and then experience jail life… temporarily. In addition to the permanent exhibits, Alcatraz East rotates through temporary exhibits – this was actually one of our favorite facets of this cool museum. The ugly truth of wildlife trafficking was the temporary exhibit the day we visited. As a local who loves our black bears, it was interesting to discover that our beloved creatures are being illegally killed to produce medicines. The temporary exhibit was a collaborative production with several non-profits and government agencies meant to highlight the dangers of the multi-billion dollar illegal wildlife trafficking industry.

You’ve never been on a roller coaster like this one. You sit alone on the track in a cart, with a brake in your hand. This mile of coaster is yours to tackle, because you control how fast your coaster goes. Use the hand brake to create a ride unique to you, or let it go and zip through the entire track. Maximum speed is about 30 mph, not enough to frighten a hardcore coaster rider, but perfect for keeping this activity fun for everyone. Even if you love the rush of bigger coasters, you shouldn’t turn your nose up at this one. The experience of controlling your own cart is truly unique, providing a different kind of thrill than what other coasters can dream up. One or two people can sit in the carts, so you can brave it alone or bring someone along. This alpine coaster has a few requirements you should know about. The person operating the cart must be 54 inches tall. If you’re going to bring a second person, you must be at least 16. Passengers need to be 38 inches tall and at least 3 years old. The cart’s weight limit changes depending on if the conditions are wet or dry; dry conditions can hold more weight. You can go in rain, snow, sunlight, or moonlight. Insider Tips: Ride the coaster more than once – additional rides are significantly discounted! Create a more thrilling ride by braking and letting go at specific times. The view from the coaster is gorgeous, too, but during your first ride you’ll be focused on operating the cart. A second ride will let you see the trees and Tennessee hills so beautifully displayed around you. The seats are a bit of a tight squeeze. If you’re above average in size, be prepared to squish a little. However, the seats are perfect for children, and kids of almost all ages will feel comfortable riding this coaster with their parents. Teens will love it especially because they get to ride alone. If you’re using the internet to find this coaster, make sure you don’t confuse it with the other alpine coaster in the area, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster. Remember, too, that if you only google Goats on the Roof (without the Coaster part) you may also get a result for a spot in Georgia, which might be a little confusing since you’re visiting Pigeon Forge.

Dinner theater is a popular pastime in the Smokies, but not all shows are created equal. If you want to feel inspired to get on your feet and dance to the tunes alongside the performers, don’t miss the Soul of Motown, a concert-style homage to the legends of the Motown era. Don’t hesitate to let your feet lead the way, either. The Grand Majestic Theater encourages attendees to dance in their seats or on the aisles. As soon as you start grooving to the Motown and soul classics you know and love, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to the 1950s or ’60s when this style of music reigned supreme. You’ll appreciate the performers’ amazing voices, impeccable dance moves, and amazing costumes. You’ll love their near-perfect imitations of Motown greats, too. In fact, you might even think you’re witnessing your favorite classic performers right there on the stage. Insider Tip: While the Soul of Motown is a dinner show, you can opt out of the dinner portion of the evening if you have other plans for an evening meal. Be sure to arrive with plenty of time to spare before the show starts, even if you aren’t planning to enjoy the included dinner

One of the coolest things to do at Pigeon Forge’s Outdoor Gravity Park? Zorbing. The name is kind of funny, but the activity is insanely cool. You know those big inflatable person-sized balls you can go inside? That’s zorbing: you’re inside a gigantic blow-up hamster ball and you roll down a hill. It’s exhilarating and unlike anything you’ve ever done. We mean ever, because currently Outdoor Gravity Park is the only place in the United States you can go zorbing. Insider Tips: Summer is the most popular time for zorbing. If you don’t want to wait in line, go before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. However, the wait time is usually short, because the rides are fast and the park has three tracks to accommodate all the zorbing. Spry senior citizens can typically handle zorbing. Though adrenaline is high, impact is relatively low. If you want to know whether you can handle zorbing, ask your doctor and talk to an expert once you get to the park. You won’t tumble inside the ball, so don’t worry about dizziness. Though the experience is a bit pricey, plan to go more than once, if only to experience two of the tracks or to do one ride with people and one ride by yourself.

The eight-mile Gatlinburg Arts & Crafts Loop is the largest group of independent artisans in North America. The independently owned shops found in this unique area feel a world removed from the crowded Gatlinburg Strip and offers a glimpse into the lives of Appalachian artists. Alewine Pottery, which is located in Gatlinburg on the Arts & Crafts Loop, is a three-generation, family-owned pottery shop that you must visit! Robert Alewine, the master potter, has trained countless artisans and the quality and authenticity of the work is immediately evident upon entering the charming store. The rapidly spinning potters wheel with the clay that seems to dance under pressure from the potter’s hand is mesmerizing! In addition to watching the clay being shaped by the rapidly spinning wheel, the artisans may be glazing individual pieces, running the clay ovens, or adding designs to high-end pieces. While it is primarily adults that will appreciate the finished work, children LOVE watching the pottery process play out before their eyes! Although Alewine is known for its signature glazed mugs that feature a bold leaf design, the shop has literally thousands of unique handthrown pottery pieces. The shelves are filled with cups, bowls, plates, mugs, vases, and every type of pottery imaginable! Each piece is unique and has a personality, but they all have one thing in common – they were handmade by Alewine right here in the Smoky Mountains.

f there’s one thing I appreciate in a variety show, it’s actual variety. That’s why we enjoyed the Smoky Mountain Opry in Pigeon Forge so much. It’s not a show you can categorize as just one thing, and it’s certainly not just more of the same old same old. It’s a fantastic variety revue that combines singing, dancing, comedy, and even special effects. Special effects? That’s what I said. Laser lights, pyrotechnics, video screens, even aerial acts. If it sounds different than what you’d expect from an opry show in Pigeon Forge, you heard me right. It is. Flat out, the Smoky Mountain Opry is one of the best shows my family has been to in years. Insider Tip: Arrive 30 minutes prior to showtime for early seating.

The Hollywood Wax Museum features dozens of life-like replicas of your favorite stars in the 22,000 square foot, two-level museum. Many of Hollywood’s most familiar faces including Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, can be found here. In addition to Hollywood’s typical stars, the musical industry is well represented with Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Taylor Swift, and many more present! This museum is different than most wax museums. Instead of placing the wax figures behind glass, they are out in the open where you can pose for photos with them. In fact, most of the wax figures have props that you can use to make the photos more complete! Insider Tip: You can visit the roof of the Hollywood Wax Museum, which offers an up-close-and-personal view of King Kong and great views of Pigeon Forge and the Parkway.

With plentiful go-kart tracks spread throughout Pigeon Forge and Sevierville, Xtreme Racing Center boasts the fastest karts in the entire region. These go-karts, which hit speeds in excess of 40 miles-per-hour, are aimed towards those who have a need for speed. Even those the world-class Sodi carts are speedy, you don’t have to leave the little ones at home if you decide to race at Xtreme Racing. The venue also boasts an elevated track where passengers as young as three years of age can accompany their parents on a thrilling ride that is enjoyable for the entire family. As soon as you catch a glimpse of Xtreme Racing Center’s main track, you’ll know that this facility is serious about your racing experience. The course measures 3,500 linear feet, and it’s a sinuous beast. Insider Tips: We recommend that you allot enough time for at least two races if you intend to drive one of the facility’s Pro Karts. Why? Because in order to race in a Pro Kart, you must first make a qualifying run in an X-Treme Kart. After your initial run, you will be moved up to the faster carts and will run the same course, but in the opposite direction. Your starting order for the second race will be the reverse of how you finished your first race. In other words, if you finished first, you’ll be put to the back of the pack. It’s not a punishment. It’s so you can enjoy the challenge of passing other racers. Xtreme Racing Center is included in the Dubby’s Park Hopper Band, which offers you a package deal on a number of area attractions.

Bluff Mountain Adventures specializes in professionally guided ATV tours that traverse the foothills of Eastern Tennessee. With a variety of all-terrain vehicles to ride and lots of space to explore, the tours promise to be fun, exciting and full of adventure. The trails at Bluff Mountain Adventures cover 6,000 acres of terrain in the Smoky Mountains, starting at Bluff Mountain and exploring some surrounding areas. In a relatively short amount of time, these trails take riders deep into the area’s beautiful surroundings for a combination of adrenaline-inducing riding and pristine nature watching. Because this is a true natural habitat, it’s impossible to predict exactly what might be seen on any one ride. The tours themselves generally range from 1 to 2 hours, and they’re open to riders of all abilities so long as they meet the minimum age and height requirements (12 years old and 57 inches tall). Novice riders have multiple beginner-friendly trails to traverse, while experienced riders can run along one of the nearby ridges. On all tours, riders can expect to cross streams, navigate turns and cover varied terrain — this isn’t the place to wear your Sunday best. All safety gear is provided, and a guide shows the way around every turn and down every hill so that there’s no question of where the trail leads. For a fun way to explore the foothills that’s a little more exciting than hiking, Bluff Mountain Adventures has a tour that’s perfect for your group. You’ll see the Smokies better than you can from any paved road. Insider Tip: – If you’re taking a group on a tour and want to save a little money, book one of the multi-people ATVs. The Cades Cove Loop winds for 11 miles through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a picturesque drive with a backdrop of the mountain peaks and its lush, rolling greens. Europeans settled the Cades Cove area between 1818 and 1821. Today, visitors to Cades Cove can enjoy the largest variety of historic buildings in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When traveling the scenic loop road, plan to get out and visit the restored buildings that include three churches, log homes, cantilevered barns and a working mill. Access the Cades Cove Loop from Laurel Creek Road, Parson Branch Road or Rich Mountain Road—the latter two roads are closed during winter. The Loop is a one-way (one-lane) paved road. The scenic driving tour through the Cades Cove Loop takes approximately two to four hours depending on traffic. Because it’s a single-lane road, be prepared to stop frequently—the slow pace makes it easy to enjoy the amazing mountain landscapes, wildflower meadows and diverse wildlife. The gently winding road offers many places to stop, park and stretch your legs while taking in the scenery. Halfway through the Loop, make a point to stop at the Visitors Center. Photo opportunities are ample and restrooms available. The water-powered mill is near the Visitor Center is a must-see as well. From early May through late September, only bicycle and foot traffic are allowed on the Cades Cove Loop until 10 a.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Vehicles can enter on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 10 a.m. Insider tip: During your drive, keep an eye out for white tail deer, coyote, elk, fox and black bears. Visitors often spy black bears in the late afternoon/early evening hours. Black bears typically can be seen along the Loop during late summer and fall.

Credited as the highest point in Tennessee, Clingmans Dome sits at 6,643 feet above sea level. It’s the third tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. Visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park can travel along the seven-mile stretch of Clingmans Dome Road to Visitors Center and trailhead that leads to the summit’s observation tower. Along Clingmans Dome Road are several scenic areas with pullouts that allow for photo opportunities of the Smoky Mountain range. The seven miles of winding road offer views of nature ranging from mountain valleys to sculpted ridges and a variety of woodland. The road closes from December 1 through March 31 (and during inclement weather); although Clingmans Dome and the observation tower are open year-round. At the end of the twisting road are a large parking area and the Visitors Center. Restrooms are available. From this parking area, follow the half-mile trail to the Clingmans Dome summit and its observation tower for one of the best views in the park. The paved trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible, but the very steep incline may be challenging for some—there are several benches along the trail for resting. Several trailheads also start on Clingmans Dome Road, including the Forney Ridge Trail, the Noland Divide Trail and the Appalachian Trail (AT), which marks its highest point where the AT crosses Clingmans Dome. There is a short half-mile hike to the summit of Clingmans Dome. However, due to the steep gradient, the brief hike may not be suitable for the young children and the elderly. At the summit, there is a 360 degree observation platform that provides visitors with 100-mile views on clear days! Insider tip: Go early—plan to arrive at the parking area about 8 a.m. in order to find good parking. After 10 a.m., the parking lot gets busy and cars often park along the roadway. Don’t forget to bring a jacket. Temperatures at the highest point in Tennessee can be as much as 20 degrees cooler than the lowland areas.

The Sinks area of the Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most picturesque spots along the Little River Road scenic drive. This area, which is 12 miles west of the Sugarlands Visitor Center, offers visitors the chance to see Mother Nature at her finest! The Sinks formed where a beautiful mountain river makes an S-turn creating natural pools that are outlined on both sides by humongous river boulders. The crystal clear water, natural pools, and waterfall make this an excellent spot to get out of the car and stretch your legs. Although this is a popular swimming hole and jumping spot on hot summer days, please be aware that this exact spot has been the location of multiple drowning and many serious injuries. We strongly advise against swimming here and recommend the calm and shallow Greenbrier section of the National Park instead. Directions: From downtown Gatlinburg, drive into the National Park. Immediately after passing the Sugarlands Visitor Center, turn right on Little River Road. The parking area for The Sinks is approximately 12 miles west of the visitor center on the left side of Little River Road. Insider Tips: -Do not make the mistake of underestimating the danger of this beautiful natural pool and waterfall area. There have been serious injuries and deaths at this popular National Park spot due to the strong undertow and currents around the falls. While swimming among the natural beauty of the mountains is tempting, it is imperative to pick a safe place without strong currents. At least seven deaths have occurred here since 1971. -The parking area is extremely limited and fills up fast during peak times! We recommend getting there early to find a spot.

This 600’ long fully-enclosed ride pulls 2.9 G’s and keeps thrill seekers happy. Ski Mountain Coaster: Race down the mountain on the Ski Mountain Coaster! This adventure lasts over 5 minutes and promises an exciting journey as you twist and turn through the lush foliage. Insider Tips: If the $15 per person to ride the aerial tramway to Ober Gatlinburg (roundtrip) seems too expensive, avoid the charges by driving up. Drive past the downtown aerial tramway station to Parkway Light #10 and turn on to Ski Mountain Road. Stay on Ski Mountain Road for approximately 3 miles and it will dead-end at Ober Gatlinburg. Parking will set you back $8 per vehicle and is limited.
Anakeesta is absolutely worth the wait in line and the price to catch these one-of-a-kind views! Whether you want to soak it all in from a suspended bridge or prefer to enjoy the view comfortably seated in an Adirondack chair, you will thank yourself for making the trip up the mountainside. The half star deduction is for small glitches in customer service that need to be worked through. Insider Tips: Although you will likely enjoy Anakeesta from your first experience up the mountain, it’s a place you’re going to want to visit time and again. Parts of the village are under construction with plans to open a restaurant, amphitheater, and single rail mountain coaster. It appears to be growing into itself with management receptive to criticism and suggestions. If you have kids with you, make sure to keep an eye (or hand) on them around the Adirondack chairs, fire pit, and the Interpretive Trail as there are no rails to protect them from falls. That said, make it a point to allow them to play in the Children’s Treehouse Village Playground where interconnected multiple bridges are designed to build strength and confidence. By the time your children are done crawling through the tube net, climbing walls and going on a bird hunt, they might just be pooped out enough to nap during the ride back down the mountain. In Gatlinburg for a family reunion or get-together with old school friends? Anakeesta offers group rates that are worth checking out.

Okay, you don’t have to go fishing just to eat at English Mountain Trout Farm & Grill, but why would you want to pass up the opportunity? The “You Hook ‘Em, We Cook ‘Em” option allows you to catch your own fish and have the staff cook them up for you. The Farm provides the fishing poles and bait you need to get going, and pond attendants are standing by to help take your catch off the line. They’ll even help bait your hook. Once you’ve caught your dinner, choose from the lemon peppered, blackened, or fried option depending on your flavor preferences. You can also catch fish to go for just $5.25 per pound, which is practically a steal! Insider Tips: The Farm is located about 30 minutes from the Parkway in Sevierville, so you’ll need to drive on US-411 North for a bit, as though you’re headed to Forbidden Caverns. In fact, the Farm is less than one mile from Forbidden Caverns, so if you’re making the trip to the Farm, be sure to stop by the underground cave for an unforgettable tour under the Smokies. You do have the option to catch and release. For families wanting their children to experience fishing for the first time, but who may not want to eat at the grill, you’re more than welcome to fish and throw back anything you catch. Avid fishermen may want to look elsewhere for a nice fishing spot. The Farm’s pond is small and made of concrete, which is ideal for families with small children. While the trout is fresh, it isn’t the best experience for someone who’s accustomed to hooking their catch directly from the creek. Bring bug spray. The flies and mosquitos can get particularly bad at this location, and many visitors have reported insect bites. Keep the spray handy and you won’t have to worry about being bitten during dinner. If you’re looking to save money, skip the fishing part of the experience and just buy a trout dinner. Fishing for your own trout costs $5 on top of the meal, so the bill can add up quickly. Credit cards are not accepted, so remember to bring your own cash, or be prepared to make a withdrawal from the Farm’s recently installed cash machine.

The Old Forge Distillery is a must-see for anyone on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail or interested in history. The distillery building is 100 years old, and it used to be a farm supply store. Today, it’s right next to the Old Mill, where grain is ground with stone. The Old Forge Distillery uses grain from the Old Mill to craft delectable alcohol using mountain water, honoring the distilling traditions that have been floating around Tennessee for generations. If you want to sample moonshine, this is the spot to do it. Do a tasting at the tasting bar when you go, because the people who work there are very knowledgable about spirits in general, and the Distillery alcohol in specific. Hear the origin stories and brewing techniques of what you’re drinking and learn what flavor notes to look for as the liquid hits your tongue. Flavored moonshine in French Toast, Coffee, and Chocolate, is also available. By the way, the Old Mill Creamery uses Old Forge Distillery moonshine in some of their treats! The interior is rustic and charming. You’re likely to see burlap sacks laid over tablecloths and a lot of wood accents and exposed beams. By the way, the moonshine for sale comes in mason jars. It’s called 1830 Original, because it uses old Tennessee moonshine recipes and techniques combined with modern knowledge. Cool, right? It’s worth buying one jar just for the novelty. If you don’t like moonshine, give it to one of your friends as a Pigeon Forge souvenir. If you’d like to take a tour, you can arrange one with the distillery ahead of time. Tastings don’t need to be pre-booked. Insider Tips: Talk to the bartender while you do your tasting, because the person behind the bar will always know their stuff. They’ll mix you a delicious drink and let you in on a few mixology secrets. If you buy some moonshine to take home, you definitely want to know how to make cocktails to impress your friends. Moonshine is just one of many spirits available here. Rum, vodka, and cream liqueur are also available. Branch out and try a few options when you visit so you can get the full effect of what the distillery has to offer.

The Old Mill Restaurant is one of the most popular restaurants in the Smokies. Expect to wait up to 90 minutes and then be served more comfort food than you could possibly eat. Although the prices may look a little steep, remember they include ‘fixins,’ drinks, and even a homemade dessert. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit. Insider Tips: If you don’t have a big appetite, you can split an entrée and pay a little extra for two sets of ‘fixins.’

The Alamo Steakhouse & Saloon offers steaks cooked over oak chips that provide a little taste of Texas. Soups, salads, gravies, and bread are all made in-house for the perfect side to a New York strip or filet mignon, and the award-winning apple crisp is to die for. To avoid a long wait, advance reservations are highly recommended. Insider Tips Weekend reservations come highly recommended to avoid a long wait and must be made at least 48 hours in advance. If you’re unable to make dinner reservations, head over to the Alamo Steakhouse around 3 p.m. The restaurant changes over from the lunch to dinner menu at this time of day, and there are usually fewer customers. Even with great reviews on Yelp, note that you may want to ask for your steak one level rarer than normal. Some patrons cite an overcooked steak to their liking. When in doubt, opt for medium-rare instead of medium.

Huck Finn's Catfish is one of the most highly regarded restaurants in Pigeon Forge, a mecca for southern cuisine. You'll love the catfish or the chicken, and the other seafood specialties are tasty, too. You can even order a 10-ounce steak if you're in the mood for something heavier. Try out some of these popular menu items: Bottomless Bowl of Baked White Beans & Turkey Ham: Everything listed including the cole slaw qualifies as vittles. As such, it’s free and all you can eat. Huck Finn’s Catfish offers amazing value for the price. Huck’s Made-from-Scratch Hushpuppies: You’re not seriously going to eat seafood without hushpuppies. Come on. Skin-On Homemade Mashed Taters & Gravy: Exactly what it sounds like and kind of gross to look at. It’s delicious, though. Creamy Cole Slaw with Our Secret Dressing: The secret ingredient in this dressing is presumably ambrosia. Gator Tail: East Tennessee is Volunteer Country. Gators aren’t welcome here unless we’re eating them for dinner. Grain-Fed, Pond-Raised Catfish: Few restaurants in the south take catfish as seriously as Huck Finn’s Catfish. You won’t believe how flavorful each bite is. Down Home Southern Fried Chicken: Just like granny used to make, only you can eat as much as you want and don’t have to pretend like you’re happy she gave you socks for your birthday. Huck’s Favorite Catfish & Chicken Combo: Why should you choose a protein when you can get both? Insider Tip: The restaurant doesn’t frown on sharing, especially for big groups. If, say, five of you are ordering, one of you should choose the endless plate of catfish while another can pick the chicken. Then, the others can order off the rest of the menu. You can then share bites of each other’s food. Just don’t abuse the privilege. Servers do have the right to refuse additional plate refills. It almost never comes up, though. The overwhelming majority of guests are courteous enough to appreciate what a great and thoughtful gesture this practice is.

They create a nostalgic experience for everyone coupled with amazing eats, tasty treats, and a retro ambience that's unlike anything else in the Smoky Mountains. Menu Favorites: Specialty Burgers: Mel’s burgers are famous in these parts, so when you have a hankering for a cheeseburger, this diner has you covered. The burger menu consists of apt names like the Ritchie Valen’s Jalapeno Cheeseburger, the Big Bopper Bacon Cheeseburger, and Marilyn’s Mushroom Cheeseburger. Every burger comes with your choice of chips, fries, pasta salad, or potato salad, and you can choose from American, Swiss, or cheddar cheese. Dawn’s Pulled Pork Barbecue: If you prefer to sample some home cooking, Mel’s Classic Diner offers pulled pork barbecue that’s been slow-roasted for 14 hours. Big Daddy’s Gut Buster Breakfast: As for breakfast options, Mel’s Classic Diner serves golden-brown pancakes, biscuits and gravy, French toast, and other popular options. apanese restaurants are hard to come by in Pigeon Forge, but Little Tokyo fills every guest's need for fresh sushi and tasty hibachi favorites. Despite its hole-in-the-wall façade, this little eatery knows how to serve up Asian flavors right! Best of all, the portions are huge, so if you leave Little Tokyo hungry, it's certainly not the staff's fault. Menu Favorites: Little Tokyo’s extensive menu includes classics such as hibachi chicken, hibachi shrimp and scallops, and other combinations, so you can’t go wrong with ordering your favorite. One of the real stars of this restaurant, however, is the Little Tokyo Special, which consists of filet mignon, chicken, and shrimp prepared with the chef’s special sauce. Another great option is the Samurai Dinner, a combination of filet mignon, lobster, and shrimp. But if these specials are too heavy on your budget, even a single-protein menu item is guaranteed to please. As for sushi options, Little Tokyo offers everything from simple salmon rolls to ruby rolls. If sitting at the sushi bar, the chefs tend to be friendly and aren’t afraid to interact with customers while crafting their favorite rolls. And what Japanese meal would be complete without hot sake? Little Tokyo serves $5 Ozeki hot sake or $15 bottles depending on your preference. You can even enjoy Kikkoman plum wine by the glass or bottle. Insider Tips Little Tokyo is centrally located off the Parkway on Teaser Lane at the end of a small shopping center. Visitors can also access it from the Parkway by turning into Bullfish Grill and driving past the seafood restaurant’s parking lot. Save money by visiting Little Tokyo during lunch hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can order the same menu item for up to $4 less and still get the soup, salad, vegetables, and fried rice that comes along with the entrée. Dinner specials, including the Little Tokyo Special, are only available after 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and after 3 p.m. on weekends. Little Tokyo also offers an Early Bird Special on weekdays from 3 to 5 p.m., excluding holidays. Coming early can also help you avoid lengthy wait times, especially during peak tourist season.

Local Goat New American Restaurant is somewhat of an oddity in Pigeon Forge, eliminating the touristy vibe and opting for something sustainable and local. Everything from the artwork to the bread to the beer is from local makers and vendors, giving outsiders as well as residents a glimpse into Pigeon Forge's food, art, and beverage scene. From the farm to your table, the food here is of the finest quality. The beef is hand-cut by the chefs, aged for a minimum of 28 days, and never frozen. Local Goat bakes all the breads, buns, and burger rolls on-site every morning, and none of its food contains GMOs, steroids, antibiotics, or high fructose corn syrup. Taking it one step further, 99 percent of the menu is crafted in-house. When you’re in the mood for a cocktail, beer, or wine, you won’t find a better selection of craft options. Of the 24 beers on tap, 22 are from local and regional breweries. Experienced bartenders make the mixers and squeeze the juice daily for that fresh, delicious cocktail. If you love a glass of wine, Local Goat has an extensive global wine list featuring reds, whites, and blushes from California, New Zealand, and Italy. Insider Tips: If you’re 21 and in the mood, don’t miss out on the happy hour, which gets you $1 off wines and draft beers from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays get you $1 off draft beers all day, Wednesdays feature $1 off all glasses of wine, and on Saturday, all bottles of wine are half-off. Local Goat has an eight-person maximum allowed at one table without reservations, so call ahead if you have a larger party.

When you want a cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and a unique dining experience that's miles apart from anything else Pigeon Forge offers, check out Smokies Caribbean Cafe. With the establishment's generous use of spices, affordable prices, and welcoming atmosphere, this intimate cafe has everything you're looking for in a tropical mountain getaway. Menu Favorites: Smokies Cuban Cafe specializes in 12-inch sandwiches. The Cuban Sandwich is a customer favorite, as it offers ham, pork, pickles, mustard, and Swiss cheese on homemade Cuban bread. You also can’t go wrong with the Roast Pork Sandwich, a familiar option made better by the Cuban spices and grilled onions. Another authentic Cuban dish is the Croquette Sandwich. Smokies Cuban Cafe makes theirs with croquettes, ham, pork, Swiss cheese, mayonnaise, and ketchup. For dinner, order the pork dinner with rice beans and yuca fries. Yuca is a long, tuberous starchy root that’s native to South America. Its brown, fibrous skin and white interior resemble a potato, which makes it a great substitute for making french fries. You can also start your morning off right at Smokies Cuban Cafe. The restaurant breakfast sandwiches and plates are filling, but the side dishes are the real stars. Order beef or guava and cheese empanadas, yuca with garlic sauce, black beans, or tostones, which are twice-fried plantain slices. And whether you fill up on breakfast or you’re just looking for a caffeine hit, Smokies Cuban Cafe is the place to be for authentic Cuban coffee. Insider Tips Smokies Cuban Cafe is a small hole-in-the-wall eatery located in a strip mall, so it’s easy to miss when you’re driving along the Parkway. Look for the shopping center situated next to Reagan’s House of Pancakes. And don’t let the modest facade fool you. This is a quality restaurant that is truly a hidden gem in the Smokies. The cafe has recently expanded, so if you’ve dined here in the past and are afraid it might be too crowded to get a seat, it’s worth a second visit. There is now a lot more room to accommodate the large influx of diners.

The Donut Friar, which is tucked away in The Village Shops in downtown Gatlinburg, is an affordable treat worthy of your visit. This small donut shop has been faithfully serving tourists and locals since 1969 and has a loyal following. While your body may not thank you for these delectable fat pills, your mouth definitely will. Since the staff starts making donuts from scratch long before the 5:00 AM daily opening, don’t be surprised if a strong aroma supernaturally pulls you into this tiny shop. Once you see bakery cases filled with homemade goodness, you will be rendered helpless. The wide variety of donuts, which range from $0.97 to $1.14 each, are made on-site each morning. Some of my favorite baked goods include the traditional glazed donuts, crullers, eclairs, cinnamon rolls, and of course their world-famous cinnamon bread. Insider Tips: Go early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) and you can park on the Parkway for free.

Get your elastic banded pants on! You’re going to need all the room you can spare to properly enjoy this delicious breakfast stop located in the heart of Gatlinburg, TN. From the best made-from-scratch biscuits we’ve tried on the entire strip, to inch-thick golden brown pancakes hearty enough to satisfy even the most die-hard pancake fanatic, the giant skillet outside isn’t compensating – they’re bragging. Here are some favorites that you’ve gotta try when you visit – The Black Bear Camp Skillet – A delicious combo featuring Pecan Smoked Bacon, generous slice of country or sugar cured ham, a large sausage link that could rival most franks, and 2 farm fresh eggs cooked up any style. Served with a side of fresh made sausage gravy, an enormous freshly made biscuit, grits (cheese, plain or brown sugar) as well as an enormous inch thick pancake and a bowl of fruit. It’s not just breakfast – it’s a feast. Postmasters Favorite – A true southern favorite. Chicken fried steak, home style sausage gravy, 2 farm fresh eggs any style. Served with a side of fresh made gravy, grits (cheese, plain or brown sugar), and that incredible inch thick pancake and fruit. Waffle of Insane Greatness – The name says it all. Really. If you love waffles, be warned – you may experience mild depression when it’s all gone. Stuffed French Toast – For those with a sweet tooth, this one is for you. A french toast extravaganza, take your pick of getting your french toast stuffed with strawberry cream cheese, blueberry cream cheese, cheese cake (yes – cheesecake), or peanut butter & jelly. Served with warm maple syrup, real whipped cream and powdered sugar. Jimmy Jose’s Scrambler – While Crockett’s 1875 Breakfast Camp has a lot of egg dishes to choose from, this one was truly something special (if you’re a mexican fiend like me!) – 3 farm fresh eggs, scrambled with Chorizo sausage, peppers, onions, tomatoes, and cheese, refried beans, Mexican rice, sour cream and warm tortillas. If that wasn’t enough to get your whistle wet, it also comes with fresh made sweet corn pone and a choice of candied apples, fresh fruit or hash browns. Pancakes – any variety. Their pancakes are HUGE. I know we said this before, but really, I’ve never seen pancakes that thick or that fluffy before – but boy were they delicious – with or without syrup Crockett’s pancakes are a meal by themselves. We had a blast trying this restaurant, and truly find their breakfast food to be a refreshing surprise on the strip – well seasoned, made fresh – you’ll search long and hard to find a breakfast as delicious and authentic as what Crockett’s Breakfast Camp is serving up daily. Insider Tip: If you’re coming with a family that has small children, it’s really easy to eat on a budget. Get one of the 4 hungry hunters huntcamp skillets – the main course is more than enough food for an adult. It comes with a huge pancake and fruit on the side with it’s own plate – for us we found this to be enough to feed a small child (age 6 or below) no problem.

Located in Gatlinburg’s historic Arts and Crafts Community, Wild Plum Tea Room offers a rarified opportunity to enjoy fine cuisine in a homey, cabin-like venue. When naming it one of the 10 Best Restaurants in the State, The Tennessean newspaper described it as “quaint and whimsical…set off the beaten path.” Although the menu is ever-evolving, it does include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. A recent day’s menu included: Appetizers, including Hot Pimento Cheese Dip with celery and crackers, Buffalo Cauliflower with ranch or blue cheese dressing, and Baked Brie. Soup favorites like Sherried Tomato Bisque and Mediterranean Stew — a hearty combination of beef, Italian sausage, pork, cabbage, red peppers, and garbanzo beans in a port red wine sauce. They also offered a vegan bowl. Entrees included Chicken Salad with fresh fruit and a warm scone or a Wild Plum Medley. The Sandwich of the Day was Ham, Havarti Cheese, and Orange Pecan Mustard Grill. Chef Specials on this particular day were Lobster Pie — a whole claw Maine lobster in artichoke cream sauce, a touch of cayenne paper, and dried mustard, topped with a puff pastry — and their famous Bison Burger stuffed with smoked gouda cheese, garlic, and a special combination of seasonings. Other unique options included a Strata of the Day — a quiche-like bread pudding served with either fresh fruit, the soup of the day, or salad of the day – and a Wild Plum Dessert Sampler. Inside Tips: Wild Plum Tea Room is a cash-only business and does not accept credit cards. Although reservations are highly encouraged, same day reservations are not accepted. Make sure to call at least one day in advance. Wild Plum’s parking lot is relatively small. You can park in the lot across the street. Be careful walking across Buckhorn Road though as it has no sidewalks and is normally quite busy. The restaurant is not totally handicap accessible. While there is handicap parking in front and the first floor is accessible, the upstairs area and restrooms are not. Wild Plum is dog friendly with dogs welcomed on the outside porch deck. Make sure your pooch is on a leash in order to keep everyone happy.

Greenbrier Restaurant features an inimitable dining experience. You're stepping through time as you enter a building that pre-dates World War II. You also enjoy an intimate ambience during your meal, whether you sit near a window or by the fireplace. he Greenbrier recently relocated to a new-to-them historic stone building on Gatlinburg’s Newman Road. The new venue, complete with secluded forest views, sets the atmosphere for a beautiful dinner, whether you’re heading to the upscale bar or enjoying a meal in the dining areas. When you walk through the door, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to a more refined age–where service is prized as highly as the gourmet dishes you order. Expect unparalleled warmth and culinary creativity when you visit The Greenbrier.
