Sightseeing

Welcome to the Southern belle of Malta. Most of the south of Malta is out of the standard tourist trail. This is the working class and less affluent region of the island and has no major hotels. However, dismiss the region at your own peril. The villages here are the heart and soul of Malta and a well timed visit to coincide with a lively village fiesta will be the cherry of your vacation. Each village has it's own parish church and adjacent square where the locals meet up to gossip or simply waste away the day watching the world go by. The south has it's own set of must see tourist attractions ranging from Megalithic temples, to traditional seaside villages and spectacular sea caves. The south is also home to some of the very best restaurants on the island.
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a complex made up of interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels. The complex was used over a span of many centuries, with the earliest remains dating back to about 4000 BC and the more recent remains found dating to the Early Bronze Age (ca 1500BC). The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is the only prehistoric burial site which is accessible to the general public and it is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, as a site that “bears a unique testimony to a civilization which has disappeared” (Criterion iii). Due to the high demand, visitors are recommended to buy tickets early as the guided tours are often fully booked weeks in advance. For tickets please visit, https://booking.heritagemalta.org/

Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, this site consists of a complex of four megalithic structures built between 3600 and 2500 BC, and re-used between 2400 and 1500 BC. The location and relationship with the temple of decorated stones, altars and other findings, indicate which type of activities might have taken place in this site. Moreover, the discovery of stone spheres that have been interpreted as being stone rollers which were used as aids for the transportation of the megaliths, have contributed to the study of the construction of these megalithic structures. Note: Due to some narrow points within the Temple structures, it is best to use wheeled vehicles, such as wheelchairs and pushchairs, which are not more than 62cm wide. For the convenience of visitors, a wheelchair is available on site, free of charge, upon request. Opening Hours Monday to Sunday: 09.00 – 17.00hrs (last admission at 16.30hrs) Neolithic Temples Street, Tarxien TXN 1063 Tel: +356 21 695 578

The small and picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk (pronounced marsa-schlock – meaning Southern Port) is popular for a daily open-air market, offering a selection of the finest fish restaurants on the island, for the peaceful walks around the coast and harbour, as well as for its secluded and untainted swimming zones. Locals enjoy the nightlife especially in Summer when you can walk the promenade, grabbing an ice cream as you go and letting the sea breeze cool off the typical Summer heat. There are two markets in Marsaxlokk – where one is essentially the extension of the other. The Marsaxlokk open market sets up shop from Monday to Saturday along the quay with stalls selling a variety of food, clothes, souvenirs, ornaments, paintings and traditional objects – however on Sundays it extends farther, focusing mainly on the retailing of fish caught by local fishermen. They set up stalls to sell their catch directly to the numerous clients that flock to the Sunday fish market. A word of warning: Sundays are usually pretty busy when locals flock to the village. That means it can be tough to park close by and you’ll have to find a parking spot in one of the back streets from the seafront. During the week, the village is much more relaxed and navigating the market is a lot easier.
