Neighbourhoods

The apartment is centrally located for the New Town and Stockbridge, both on the door step and great fun to walk around to explore. However, when you travel it's good to get a more of a flavour for the real Edinburgh and one of the advantages of the city is its position on the coast, please take the trip down to Leith.
With wide streets, Georgian architecture and a World Heritage site, people love the ambiance with bespoke coffee houses, cosy bars and vibrant atmosphere. This is Edinburgh at it best - where you can walk everywhere from the Castle down the Royal Mile then head over to George Street from retail therapy before home

Originally built for the creative types it's now full of great places to eat, socialise and beautiful parks for walks. Check out Inverleith Park and feed the swans, the water of Leith walkway or head over to the Royal Botanic Gardens you can easily spend a few hours there - plus there is a gift shop and often interesting exhibitions.

Such a great vibrant area - the fishing port of Edinburgh. Catch the number 36 bus from the stop outside the apartment and head down to Leith for bustling bars, restaurants around the waterfront. I believe there is a film studio opening here shortly but currently the home of the advertising and creative communities. Check out Michelin Star restaurants from Martin Wishart or Tom Kitchin, for more casual try Cafe Tartine or Mimi's Bakehouse. If the weather is good you might just need an ice-cream from Crolla's

For over 30 years L'Alba D'Oro has been one of the very best fish & chip shops in Edinburgh - an institution and best of all on your doorstep from the apartment. Also a great place to spot some famous faces when they are in town!

For one of the best pizza's in town - in fact my daughter would say better than many of the pizza restaurants! Check out their menu online www.anima-online.co.uk give them a call on 0131 558 2918 and you can pop across the road to pick it up.

So if it's a leisurely brunch you're looking for head along to Stockbridge for this institution. But be early at the weekend as the queues often go out the door - but it is worth the wait!

Ok so Chef Tom Kerridge came to Edinburgh and chose The Fishmarket as the best fish and chips in the UK!!?? A partnership with a Michelin star chef and the key fishmonger to all the top restaurants - he might have a point. Unfortunately since he made this statement on national TV the queues have been out the door and it's not unheard of to wait 2 hours (although it's worth it!). My suggestion would be hire one of the Just Eat bikes on the corner of Henderson Row/Dundas Street and take the bicycle path down to Newhaven and enjoy your Scampi/Lobster/Fish supper on the pier. You will find the start of the cycle path just on Eyre Place and it will take you 15/20 minutes and a straight direction to reach The Fishmarket.

Sightseeing

Edinburgh is Scotland's busiest tourist hub and not surprisingly with the variety of different historical places to go and see. Soak up the history at some of my favourite attractions, and the ones I keep going back to with friends and family.
You can easily lose yourself in the Botanic Gardens and only a few minutes walk from the apartment. With a couple of cafes, and a better restaurant found in the John Hope centre, there is also a gift shop. The Botanics have a number of special events so check out their website but I recently went with friends to the outdoor cinema to watch A Star Is Born, I can't think of a better setting for a movie night!

The number 36 bus stops directly outside the apartment and it will take you directly down to Ocean Terminal where the Royal Yacht Britannia is docked. Ocean Terminal also has a variety of shops, restaurants, a cinema and roller skating area.

Well I'm lucky enough to say I got married here and what a day it was - so I have a particular soft spot for the Castle. So from watching it light up at night and seeing the festival & Tattoo fireworks from the comfort of the apartment it's great to get out and visit. Remember if you're planning on seeing a number of Historic Scotland sites it would be worth checking out their Explorer pass which also gives 20% discount in the cafe and gift shops.

The venue for the weekly 5km Parkrun every Saturday morning at 9.30am - Cramond coastline is a wonderful walk and there are a few cafes for a coffee, I would recommend heading more upstream past where the boats are berthed to Cramond Falls Cafe (just a little more reasonably priced and nice scones!). If the tide is out you can also walk out to Cramond island but please check the tide first as people are often marooned and the lifeguard has to rescue them. If you head up to George Street/Hanover Street you can get the number 41 bus out to Cramond.

When we have friends come to stay this would be our big day out - so awesome to see Edinburgh from the sea! Catch the ferry from South Queensferry (check out Groupon for any deals with the Three Bridges & Inchcolm Island cruise). Inchcolm Abbey is a Historic Scotland venue this would be a great addition to your stay if you are visiting Edinburgh Castle so get the Explorer pass.

Health & Fitness

Often when you travel you would like to keep up with some of your health and fitness routine. Below are the best ones which don't require a membership and local to the apartment .

Hair & Beauty

Neither of the suggestions would be in the budget category. However, from my time living in Edinburgh my hair and beauty entries offer quality experiences and won't disappoint.
If you are looking for a pamper and most up-to-date hairstyle you don't need to look further than Bruce Masefield. Bruce was Vidal Sassoon's creative director for many years and still teaches and judge's hairdressers across the country. Even better he is just one of the nicest people you can meet and you won't get your normal boring hairdresser chit chat! His team of hairdressers will fit most budgets but my regulars would be Lexi and Bruce.
