Villanueva and surroundings: What to do

The town of Villanueva de la Cañada is famous for its universities and its young atmosphere, full of students in their school days and also of young families with young children. It is the ideal place to spend a few days, whether you come to visit your sons who are studying or if you come to enjoy its enviable natural environment, it is the epicenter of regional parks and historical places such as El Escorial or Navalcarnero. In summer, you can also enjoy the largest water park in Spain, Aquopolis. The sport is linked to this town, you can use its kilometers of bike lanes, or train outdoors in its parks, go horse riding at nearby horse riding or play golf in its field, a few meters from the UAX. A few kilometers from Villanueva you will find a 14th century castle, in the immediate vicinity of the Aulencia River, by which it takes its name, and which is the main monument of Villanueva, although it is possible to get close, you cannot visit.

Lugares emblemáticos

Just 20 minutes by car from Villanueva, we find the Monastery of El Escorial, declared a World Heritage Site. It is the maximum representation of art, culture and power that maintained the Spanish empire throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Built in the time of Philip II to commemorate the battle of San Quintín against the French troops on August 10, 1557, the day of San Lorenzo and used by him and his predecessors as a place of withdrawal from the Court. Today it is Monastery and Royal College run by Benedictine monks and guard the mortal remains of all the Kings of Spain since the fifteenth century, it is worth visiting just to see the royal crypt and the pantheon of infants, but also the Library and The Casita del Principe and del Infante are unique and complete the visit. In addition, it is worth visiting the real site (the gardens and surroundings of the monastery) and if you go early it is very pleasant to walk along Mount Abantos and visit the chair of Felipe II, chair embedded in the rock of the mountain from where the King watched the progress of the works of the monastery.

A few kilometers from Villanueva, just 20 minutes by car is the Villa de Navalcarnero, a charming town that retains the typical Castilian style for more than five centuries. In it you can find numerous restaurants where you can taste the typical Castilian dishes, from a good lamb lamb, to a good stew, passing through the famous Guiso del Segador (pot of the reaper), a stew similar to the "cocido madrileño".

Beyond politics and the meaning it may have, the majestic cross (150 meters high) and the Basilica carved into the mountain surprise any visitor. The natural environment of the Sierra de Guadarrama favors the spectacular nature of the place. It is the largest mass grave in Spain, because there lie the bodies of thousands of deaths of the Spanish civil war (1936-1939) in addition to the bodys of Francisco Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera. Just 9 kilometers from El Escorial and half an hour drive from Villanueva de la Cañada.

Segovia is only an hour's drive from Villanueva de la Cañada and there are direct trains from Madrid. Segovia was the capital of the kingdom of Castilla and has all the charm of a Castilian medieval village. You immerse yourself in the fourteenth century walking through its streets. The most picturesque of Segovia, in addition to its streets, is the impressive Roman aqueduct and the Alcazar of Segovia (typical Castilian castle). As a curiosity, it is the castle in which Disney was set to create the Snow White witch castle. The fortress can be visited and its views from there are spectacular. It was the residence of the Catholic Monarchs, so it is a must for every good lover of History. Of course you should not miss the best dishes of Segovia cuisine, Judíones (beans), Cochinillo (Cosuckling pig) and Ponche Segoviano -Segovian punch- (and if it is in the restaurant Casa Cándido you will not be disappointed). Surely you're rolling! 😜

Toledo is just 1 hour from Villanueva by car and half an hour from Madrid by AVE. Also called the city of the 3 cultures because there they lived in the same space, Christians, Jews and Muslims for several centuries. Fruit of that is the cultural and artistic level of Toledo where you can admire in its streets the reflection of this fact. Walking through such emblematic places as the Jewish quarter or admiring buildings as impressive as the cathedral of Toledo is a pleasure for the senses that has no comparison. As a curious fact, the best and most prestigious swords and florins in Europe have been forged since medieval times since the blacksmiths who forged them were the most experienced. Do not forget to buy the famous "mazapán", the most typical sweets of Toledo, delicious!
