Hackfalls Arboretum is home to over 3000 species and varieties of oaks, alders, cherries, magnolias, maples and more. The collection of evergreen and semi-evergreen Mexican oak species is considered the largest private collection of oaks in the Southern Hemisphere. Hackfalls boasts a variety of spectacular walking tracks, lakes and gardens to visit. The property is also a working sheep and cattle station, which means you get to experience this flourishing arboretum within a picturesque East Coast farm setting. Just a short drive from our cottage.

The Falls are a short drive from our cottage. The falls are fed by the Hangaroa and Ruakituri Rivers that merge just above. There is a short 5 minute walk down beside the falls. Note, the viewing platform has been removed. The best time to view the falls is during or after high rainfall.

RERE ROCKSLIDE is a 200-foot natural slide made slick by its moss covered rocks. Water from the Wharekopae River is constantly flowing over these rocks which makes them better than any slip ‘n slide you’ve ever been on.You can slide down on a piece of cardboard or any replacement. This place is full of fun for you and your kids! 80 KM from our cottage

The Wairoa Museum is centrally located on Marine Parade, Wairoa. In late 2016 the Museum launched a major re-development - Kakapa (the Pulse). This included refurbishment of all galleries and installation of new exhibitions, increasing overall exhibition space by 100% and displayable collection from 5% to 85%. Interactive discovery space was developed and the repatriation of a New Zealand Māori war flag from a museum in Scotland was completed. The museum is 38 km from our cottage
