Food Scene

A painfully cool joint serving up stylish, Asian-inspired small plates in an even more stylish setting – think pan-fried duck breast in sweet orange miso or mapo eggplant tofu with shiitake mushrooms. There are also bottomless boozy brunches at the weekend, featuring Korean croquettes for further exotic flavours.

After the original Mare Street branch gained an almost cult-like local following, Green Papaya branched out to Hoxton – albeit bordering Shoreditch – where it continues to serve up superb Vietnamese dishes with a hint of Chinese influence. It’s cheap-ish and cheerful, but still cool enough to attract everyone from hip kids to local families.

Don’t be fooled by the shabby exterior; this unassuming Hoxton restaurant on the Shoreditch/Hoxton border boats top-notch Vietnamese cooking at reasonable prices, including fish dishes and unusual offerings for Western tastebuds, such as goat with galangal and stir-fried frogs’ legs, plus plenty for non-meat-eaters. Another bonus: it’s BYO.

Cram in a bagel-load of New Yoik food culture at this much-loved sandwich specialist. There’s a fair bit to choose from, but the homemade salt beef is the star, although whatever you opt for it’ll be spilling out of your sarnie, just the way it should be. The venue even looks and feels for all the world like an old-school NYC deli.
