At the northeastern end of Folly Island you will find an undeveloped area with an outstanding view of the inlet and the Morris Island Lighthouse. A half-mile long hiking trail, most of which is paved, takes you from the park entrance to the beach. There is some evidence of vandalism here, but most of the area is in good shape. Finding a place to park your car may be difficult on summer weekends.

The Angel Oak Tree on South Carolina’s largest island, John’s Island, is the oldest tree east of the Mississippi River and is one of the oldest living things in the United States. This behemoth of a tree resides near Charleston, South Carolina and the Angel Oak Tree is a Southern Live Oak, or Quercus Virginiana. It’s so large (65 feet high and 28 feet in circumference) that it has its own address, 3688 Angel Oak Road, in its own park, Angel Oak Park. In addition to its stretched height, it’s a sprawling 2,000 square feet of shade from its tree-sized branches. The Angel Oak once belonged on the property of Justus Angel and his wife Martha Waight Tucker Angel. The land was originally granted to Abraham Waight, a wealthy plantation owner, in 1717. The tree was named after the estate on which it stood and soon, other folklore. Because the land was a plantation, tales of the ghosts of slaves appearing around the tree as angels at night began to grow and so the tree became “Angel”. The land and tree remained in the Angel family for four generations. Later, it was included as part of the marriage agreement between Justus Angel and Martha Waight Tucker.

If you have an interest in unique Charleston history, you'll have to visit the Charleston Museum. This city has so many stories it's difficult to choose just one...but I'm feeling the call of the ocean... James Island/Folly Beach is the area where native New Yorkers George and Ira Gershwin worked on the music and lyrics for the play “Porgy and Bess”. Remember the song “Summertime”? Eighty-five years ago, George Gershwin, the ultimate urbanite, “went native”—shirtless, shaveless, and shoeless—on Folly, immersing himself in the lore and rhythms of the place to create the score for Porgy and Bess, an American operatic masterpiece. In 1926, Gershwin had stumbled on Dubose Heyward’s story, Porgy, of a goat cart beggar who finds love and loss. After considering an opera based on the medieval Jewish legend of the malicious spirit dybbuk or a “melting pot” story based in New York City, he knew instantly Porgy was it. In June 1934, Gershwin arrived for a six-week stay. Folly then was a remote, one telephone, shack-lined shore where electricity and ice were considered luxuries. On a rented piano, Gershwin plucked notes as if divining them from the atmosphere, following up the tune he had created for Heyward’s lyric, “Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” The end result has been heard by millions. The Gershwin-Heyward opera reprises that momentous season at Folly and will be revived this September, 2019 with a production at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. You can search the Charleston Museum, Porgy and Bess to read about the real "Porgy".

Even after 20+ years of eating at Mondo's I can say I've never been disappointed. It's my go-to restaurant! Don't let the strip mall environs fool you: Mondo's is a hidden gem of a restaurant, serving up fresh, flavorful Italian staples like bruschetta, prosciutto-wrapped artichoke hearts, house-made pastas and signature, homemade meatballs. Pasta enthusiasts will be happy here, what with the affordable, heaping portions of penne, ravioli, and fettucine, but you really can't go wrong with anything on the market-driven menu. Weather permitting, be sure to check out the cozy, fauna- and light-laden patio out back.

Spend an afternoon on Wadmalaw Island. This is the home of Charleston Tea Plantation teas - nine very special flavors of tea, including our original American Classic Tea. This is the only brand of tea in the world that is made exclusively with 100% tea grown in America. The Plantation sits right off Maybank Highway. Driving down Maybank is like taking a step back in time. Wadmalaw has not and cannot be commercially developed, therefore much of the land remains untouched. The Island is also home to other unique and historic attractions such as Deep Water Vineyard, the only domestic winery in Charleston, South Carolina as well as the Angel Oak, a Live Oak tree that is believed to be over 1,500 years old.

A local and visitor favorite, we grow and harvest the grapes as well as make and bottle our wines all on site. You'll find us about 30 minutes south of Charleston, on the sleepy island of Wadmalaw. Our vineyard offers walking trails, many animals to get to know, a garden, a large pond, the winery (of course), our gift shop, and Firefly distillery. Prepare to spend a few hours, or a full day enjoying a walk through the vines; or take advantage of our affordable and informative wine tastings. Whether you’re a large group or intimate couple, the vineyard has plenty of things to do. For $7.00, you'll go on a "choose your own adventure" tour of our 9 wines, weaving your way through 5 tastes. And, since we value our employees being able to be spontaneous, you may have some surprise tastes as well (especially if you come during the week when we're not so busy). At the end you will receive a complimentary wine glass to remember your time at the vineyard. Guests are welcome to stroll through the 7 miles of vines in our vineyard as a self-guided tour.

“What happened in Charleston, New Orleans, Memphis, Kansas City, Savannah and other cities not only illustrates the fact that jazz was born in America, their stories prove that America is built on the same principles as jazz. It’s a kind of real-world metaphor. Jazz is democratic. Everyone can have something to say. It’s diverse and inclusive. It’s an experiment. There’s never been anything like it before.
