One of our kids favorite places since it was just a food truck at the Auke Bay Harbor. (You can still see the truck on the highway as you approach the turn off to the harbor). It is walking distance from our home and it has great shakes and sandwiches.

This is a quote from Ruth Allman, the judges niece and sole survivor, who lived in the house and gave tours for many years. She was famous for her aurora borealis waffles (she lit a sugar cube soaked in vanilla). It is a great place to go while enjoying a walk in the older neighborhood.

Great fun area between town and the valley. A neighborhood playground that was built totally by volunteers! There is also fishing.

Seasonally see salmon returning to the hatchery through the window on the fish ladder, see the harvesting of eggs and milt, see the fry as they grow. All of this and a huge aquarium featuring plants and animals gathered near the hatchery itself. There are kid level smaller tanks featuring various animals and a touch tank. There is a great gift shop featuring both salmon and other Alaskan items

Forest Service employees can answer your questions and guide you to appropriate trails ranging from easy to experienced hikers only.
