Raglan is a firm favourite I always tell my guests to definitely take a day trip to from the housewithnonails. why? its a little sleepy coastal town with so much character. Its known for its black sands and long surf break at Manu Bay. Native forest surrounds the bridal Veil falls. Mount Karioi is an extinct forest clad volcano with amazing summit views over the Tasman sea. I love to go down to the bridge and just watch the local maori boys doing "dive bombs" off the bridge. There is opportunity to rock climb, cave, Kayak. There is even a new BMX track. The ultimate is to cruise aboard the wahineemoe at sunset and explore the raglan harbour. If you are arty like me, Ragln is full of talented people making pottery, weaving, stone carving. But its got to be the vegan food and nice cafes. "The Shack" is the place!!!!

this is a little gem we keep telling our guests when they take a day trip to Rotorua. A naturalhot-springs area with a waterfall, surrounded by dense forest and primitive trails. 35 km south of Rotorua, its a small stream and flows downhill through natural bush. There is a good old kiwi corrugated changing shed to change in. bathers have cut out small rocks to form their own hot pools that you can sit next to and enjoy the cascading water. its a very effective way to ease aches and pains afer a hard tramp The massage from the water fall is great

Guests tend to fly into Auckland from overseas, visit Waitomo, stay a night here at the housewithnonails and attend the Hobbiton Banquet.Next day they head to Rotorua. We always recommend the Polynesian Spa experience, because of its amazing geothermal hot springs and therapies. Historically it is New Zealands original iconic geothermal bathing experience, accessing both acidic and alkaline natural mineral springs. Soak in the world famous springs built on the site of historic bath houses for which the city became famous in the 1800s. These ancient springs ease aching muscles and the alkaline waters rejuvenate skin, increasing immunity and energy levels. Think geothermal mud body wraps, coconut oil massages, scalp massages and facials. Infact it is promised that the silica waters will bless you with ageless beauty. The crowning experience is to bath in a hot geothermal pool beneath a starry sky . 073481328

we took our grandchildren to the Hamilton Zoo and for Gus who loves to follow a map and find a reward, he wasnt disappointed at the rather exotic animals he found!!! He loved the walkways under the trees and seeing the tall giraffes heads over the wire enclosures was fascinating. The zookeeper was feeding the animals and Gus got to talk to him, and learnt about the personalities of the animals at the zoo. We brought a picnic and just sat under the trees then had an icecream at the onsite cafe- the hungry Morepork. This was a great day out for our family.

we took our grandchildren to the Hamilton Zoo and for Gus who loves to follow a map and find a reward, he wasnt disappointed at the rather exotic animals he found!!! This is a really fun family thing to do with the little ones. 40 mins from the housewithnonails on route to Waihe along the karangahake gorge , set on a beautiful farm- is the Bullswool Farm and nature park, at 240 Rahu Road, Karangahake. Its the ultimate family day out and has been voted the southern Coromandel's best tourist attraction- and it is!!!!its a real rural paradise. There are native birds, trees, mining stories, a sheep shed display, an early NZ milking shed, farm tools, working horses for Dad. But its the up close hands on animals the kids can touch that all the family will love!!Infact they can feed the rabbits, see the miniature horses, emus, goats, alpacas, llamas and deer. Find the rare chickens, ducks, pheasants , and colored sheep. Take a picnic and just let the kids enjoy this farm setting in rural New Zealand. 078628843

Then as friendshipos are forge dine on a traditional hangi feast, where the food is cooked slowly beneath the the ground in earth ovens these are actual events fro history re enacted, with real characters, traditional arts and crafts, powerful song and dance. Food scene

we are a bit lucky to boast that the Kaimai cheese cafe and restaurant is only 3 minutes down the road, and they really do make "top shelf" specialty cheeses , "natural". A replica building of an old 1920 Butter Factory, with trusses and roof vents from the original butter factory used in the building, its a beautiful setting. So head on down there to have a lovely hot chocolate in an old butter factory. Order the cheese platter which shows off all their cheeses.. Its the perfect spot for pit stop!!!!

The falls cafe is the most amazing place for its setting and food, that you just keep wanting to go back time after time. Its that "natural experience. The veggie garden setting under the trees, the fresh seasonal food you get served from it. its a get away from the hustle and bustle kind of place where you just linger and relax. The dining is informal, the kind that is served clean fresh and on a rustic board. Brad King is the award winning chef. I love his gourmet wood fired pizzas. The bistro is a little cottage setting under the trees with a gorgeous open kitchen so you can actually watch the chefs at work. The wood fired oven sits in the centre of the kitchen and really is the heart of the business . What Dewi and I did and recommend is to book a lunch or afternoon tea at the falls cafe, to return to after you have taken the "windows walk" in the Karangahake gorge. We ordered a sharing platter. Imagine sitting down under the trees , the breeze in your face, the kids playing found about, and sharing the chefs seasonal taster- house cured and smoked Kahawai with a smoked fish and fraiche rillet and pickled artichoke. We took a vegetarian friend and they had the light main of butternut and goats cheese stuffed portobella mushrooms served with lentils and a dhal curried pumpkin salad, pickled red onions port currants and seasonal root veg. Nice!!!! Dessert was their "zesty" pie, local lime tart with vanilla bean french cream!!!whooh yummy, mulled with poached tamarillos and ginger icecream!!!!! awesome flavours

Im always telling people about this wonderful eatery I happened to find and fall in love with, then took our daughter and grand daughter too, and just keep recommending it to anyone who will listen. Why? the food is amazing. Fresh trendy wholesome. But its the setting. its kind of a 50's inspired boutique place. Its absolute history, once the National bank Gold refinery in 1914. so massive solid concrete walls, after yourve seen the moss vovered cute entrance off Willoughbu street, nos 5. thats what gets your attention first!!! go in the door, and the double height stud blows you away. The huge timber beams and Rimu roof structure certainly fits the grandeur of its original purpose.. Its a huge light filled space, and you immediately feel relaxed - lots of armchairs magazines things to look at, a roaring fire right now because its winter. In the summertime we sat out under the apple tree- it was such a quaint feeling being in the back yard. . Its like you are encouraged to read a book whilst you have your coffee. linger!!!. Ther eis even a collection of old vinyl to put on. Everything you eat looks and tastes hand made- free range eegs and bacon, local stuff, organic milk in the coffeees. No rubbish. The day i went i had a famous Beef Potato onion and cheddar pastry with a homemade beetroot chutney with a seasonal salad- absolutely tummy. And then!!! I had to have their Banana and salted caramel cake with my flat white coffee. A wonderful experience. The big news is they are NZ cafe of the years finalist!!! lets hope they bring the cup home. Now I tell all my guests to stop in at The Refinery in Paeroa on route up the Coromandel!!!! and when entering the karangahake Gorge to do the "windows Walk". A fabulous day out!!!

why do I recommend this shopping experience? because its a very kiwi thing to "go opp shopping" . Theres one two or three of them in every town. Thats where someone else has thrown out or donated an object they dont want any more and another person finds it and claims it as their treasure. Books, clothes, furniture items lamps mirrors you name it!!! Now there are opp shop queens who build businesses out of such collections on instagram. Anyway, pop down to the matamata salvation army runby Simone, and find a treasure to take home overseas!!!!

aha- there are some curious "escape rooms" to discover ten minutes away from the housewithnonails. They say "it will take true grit"- that is you are a part of the posse, deputized by the state marshall to solve a string of stagecoach robbers. www.trapd.co.nz

when my boys were growing up here at the housewithnonails, BMXing was a feature we did often, infact it was nothing to take a group of boys and friends and be parked up outside a track whilst the boys did the laps. Te Miro Mountain Bike Park, 25 minutes drive from here, on Waterworks road, offers trails for everyone, ranging from family friendly beginner rides to those looking for something a bit more technical. Ride for an hour or set up camp at the shelters over looking the reservoir and make a day of it.
