Things to do

Enjoy a truly unique cinema experience in the beautifully restored Stella Cinema, an iconic cinematic landmark which sits confidently in heart of Dublin 6. The cinema itself has been sympathetically restored to reflect the glamour and glitz of the 1920’s for an entire new generation of movie-goers. Originally opening its doors in 1923, the theatre was affectionately named The Stella, designed by architectural firm Higginbotham & Stafford it held 1,283 patrons, making it Ireland’s largest cinema at the time. In true art-deco style it featured a ballroom on the first floor and an incredible fountain in the foyer. During the current restoration, some beautiful original 1920s features such as the original façade with granite pilasters were uncovered, along with a typical art deco handrail which guides you up to the first-floor balcony, detailed mosaic tiling of the original Stella logo and original decorative ceiling mouldings which have been kindly restored and dotted throughout the theatre. The original suspended projection booth is also still in place. We welcome you to enjoy all that The Stella Cinema has to offer. Choose from the latest blockbuster releases or classic favourites and book your ticket online or at the box office, all our films are listed here, take your pick! Choose your seat, from our not so standard luxurious red armchairs, to the comfy sofas made for two or our big double beds that engulf the front row. Sit back, get comfy and enjoy! What’s a trip to the cinema without a bit of indulgence? Well we’ve got you sorted with a menu full of mouth-watering food, which we’ll deliver right to your seat at the beginning of each film. A selection of fine delicious cocktails and your staple cinema favourites; popcorn, confectionery, soft drinks and nachos, all of which you can pick up at the refreshments bar in the lobby. A trip to Stella Cinema is not complete until you’ve discovered The Stella Cocktail Club upstairs. The original ballroom has been transformed into a luxurious cocktail bar, with a glass atrium and a large front facing window overlooking the bustling Rathmines main street, as well as a quaint outdoor terrace decked out in comfortable seats, perfect for sipping on movie inspired cocktails under the stars. It has the décor, vibe and luxurious comfort of its sister The Vintage Cocktail Club, and a bespoke cocktail and food menu to impress. The Stella Cinema and Stella Cocktail Club are open for business seven days. Every Friday and Saturday we’ll play host to the night owls of Dublin with a special midnight screening and ensure young families are well entertained with a weekly family movie. The Stella Cocktail Club is open from 5pm every day, and tables can be booked here.

Kilmainham Gaol opened in 1796 as the new County Gaol for Dublin. It closed its doors in 1924. Today the building symbolises the tradition of militant and constitutional nationalism from the rebellion of 1798 to the Irish Civil War of 1922-23. Leaders of the rebellions of 1798, 1803, 1848,1867 and 1916 were detained and in some cases executed here. Many members of the Irish Republican movement during the Anglo-Irish War (1919-21) were also detained in Kilmainham Gaol, guarded by British troops. Names such as Henry Joy McCracken, Robert Emmet, Anne Devlin, Charles Stewart Parnell and the leaders of 1916 will always be associated with the building. It should not be forgotten however that, as a county gaol, Kilmainham held thousands of ordinary men, women and children. Their crimes ranged from petty offences such as stealing food to more serious crimes such as murder or rape. Convicts from many parts of Ireland were held here for long periods waiting to be transported to Australia. Kilmainham Gaol Museum is operated and managed by the Office of Public Works. Guided Tours Entrance to Kilmainham Gaol is by guided tour only and is managed through timed tickets. Advance booking online is essential to guarantee entry. Tickets can be booked online 60 days in advance. Cancellation tickets for the day will be released online every morning between 9:15am-9:30am. Further information on tours, tickets and facilities can be found on Plan a Visit & Frequently Asked Questions. 

The original castle at Rathfarnham dates back to the Elizabethan period and was built for Archbishop Adam Loftus, an ambitious Yorkshire clergyman who later became Lord Chancellor of Ireland. In the late eighteenth century, the house was remodelled on a splendid scale employing some of the finest architects of the day including Sir William Chambers and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. The collection includes family portraits by Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807), Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), and Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1740-1808). Terenure Neighbourhood

Victorian grandeur around a proper old village centre And birthplace of James Joyce’s ma. Oct 19th 2018, 3:07 PM 11,883 Views 4 Comments Share308 Tweet Email5 Image: infomatique Your Neighbourhood is a series of local area guides from TheJournal.ie, presented by KBC. We’re bringing you the best of city neighbourhoods combined with the latest property data. THE NAME ‘TERENURE’ comes from the Irish Tír an Iúir, meaning ‘land of the yew tree’. And for most of Dublin’s history, this neighbourhood was a country estate, owned by a succession of wealthy landowners. Bushy Park is the remainder of that estate today. But in 1801, a road was built heading southwest from Rathgar, which crossed the road leading south from Harold’s Cross. At the crossroads, a tiny village began to develop (it was initially called Roundtown) and this became the commercial cluster at Terenure Cross. By the end of the 19th century, large scale construction was under way in Terenure, and most of the grander homes date from this time and the early 1900s. It remained on the fringe of the city – the terminus of a tram line – until the 1930s, when Dublin expanded around and beyond it. Today, Terenure is a largely affluent area, although it shades into the more affordable Kimmage and Perrystown at the north and west end. It’s bordered to the south and east by Templeogue, Rathfarnham and Rathgar. Take me there! Alright so. Here you are at the crossroads in Terenure, facing Vaughan’s. (Terenure Cross is also known as Vaughan’s Corner.) So what’s the big draw? Terenure is classic redbrick south Dublin: Victorian homes, leafy streets, and generally well-kempt. It has a proper village centre with pubs, restaurants, and some independent shops. And it’s well supplied with schools, sports facilities and all the amenities you’d expect. It even has a Lidl AND and Aldi. What do people love about it? It has a village feel – both in amenities and community, says Genna Patterson. I like the village feel, and the lovely architecture, plus excellent Bushy Park and friendly community. It’s a lively place with plenty of street life, says Claire Costelloe. I like how close it is to the city centre, but that it is also a suburb. Access to a lovely park with a pond and ducks and tennis courts, and lots of restaurants and pubs and places to eat and drink – and that’s always evolving. And… what do people NOT love about it? Traffic, says Genna. I didn’t like the traffic at the crossroads in the centre, and the lack of Dublin bike stations. Limited to bus or driving. No decent coffee shop, says Claire… but that’s been fixed! I didn’t like the fact that until recently, we didn’t have a good quality coffee shop. It was mainly pubs and places for dinner. Now we have Foam which does amazing coffee. What’s the story with house prices? Eh, pretty steep. The average asking price for a home in Terenure is €601,177 – on a par with Donnybrook. It’s a tad more expensive than its neighbour Templeogue, and a good way more than Rathmines or Harold’s Cross. How long will it take me to the city centre? It’s just under an hour’s brisk walk into town. On the bus, it will take you around half an hour – the 15/a/b/d, 16, 49 and 65 all pass through. In the car, it’s more like 20 minutes outside peak times. Cycling will get you there just as fast. Where should I get lunch? Try the aforementioned Foam Coffeehouse, which as well as coffee serves excellent salads and sandwiches. Alternatives: You could have a look at the Lovely Food Co, which also does a strong line in sandwiches and salads. Or for something sweet, swing by the Corner Bakery. And what’s my new local? Have a look into Vaughan’s, the pub on the corner of the crossroads. Reliable pints and the food gets decent reviews too. Alternatives: Brady’s is Vaughan’s main rival, another sizeable pub with a food offering. Schools and supermarkets? There’s an Aldi and a Lidl at the crossroads, with a Tesco Metro a bit further up the road into town. Close by in Rathgar is a SuperValu. There are seven primary schools nearby: Presentation (Catholic, girls, 611 pupils); St Joseph’s (Catholic, boys, 458 pupils); Pius X Girls and Boys (Catholic, 532 and 534 pupils); Gaelscoil Mologa (Catholic, mixed, 227 pupils); Harold’s Cross NS (Catholic, mixed, 371 pupils); and Rathgar NS (Methodist, mixed, 93 pupils). There are five post-primary schools: Presentation Community College (Catholic, mixed, 330 pupils); Terenure College (Catholic, boys, 682 pupils); Our Lady’s (Catholic, girls, 768 pupils); The High School (Church of Ireland, mixed, 706 pupils); and Stratford College (Jewish, mixed, 143 pupils).

Diep has been bringing authentic Thai food to Dublin for almost 20 years. We established Diep in 1999 with the creation of our iconic restaurant Diep Le Shaker on Pembroke Lane, D2. Diep has been bringing authentic Thai food to Dublin for almost 20 years. We established Diep in 1999 with the creation of our iconic restaurant Diep Le Shaker on Pembroke Lane, D2. At the time, Diep le Shaker was a pioneer in Thai cuisine and became a fixture in the Dublin restaurant scene, attracting visitors from all over the world with its unique mix of outstanding food and great party atmosphere. As a result of its huge popularity, we created a more casual way to offer this great cuisine to our customers-the first Diep Thai food delivery outlet in Ranelagh in 2004, and we have remained at the forefront of Thai cuisine in Ireland ever since. We have always been committed to sourcing the best available ingredients to ensure that we create amazing flavours and remain true to our roots in authentic, fresh Thai cuisine. Sightseeing

Dublin Mountains Way Starting at Sean Walsh park in Tallaght (which is handy with the Luas from the city centre) we set off heading for the hills in full view, how inviting they looked too. We passed through the urban jungle to Kiltipper where the DMW bug kicks in and we get closer to the Hills. As we come into Kiltipper parklands we know for sure our adventure is nearly hitting the right notes. We hear the busy sounds of the river Dodder to our left and ahead see the lush green hills which look so inviting and picturesque. As we exit the parklands and cross over the main Ballynascorney Rd we enter the masterpiece of architecture and Engineering that is Glenasmole Reservoir. Here we hear the sound of nature at her very best and see our very first Red squirrel ever. The abundantce of trees frame the still lakes so well and on them we see fly-fisher men casting like Brad Pitt in Legend of the falls. Peace and tranquillity resonates from the whole experience and we are not yet 10km into the DMW. The mountains look so beautiful on both sides of the valley and seem to stretch high into the sky, yet they are so close we could touch them, a great sense of security came over me here and a one with Nature. Glenasmole Valley is a very special place where we met locals who adored telling us the stories of ancient times. We finished our day here and will resume again our DMW adventure
