Beaches

Beaches and swimming places within an hour's drive from Elne
Mainly sandy beach with steep drop into the water, often has big waves, great fun for body boarding and more confident swimmers. Accessible from Elne via bus, or by car - there is a large car park by the beach. There are a few places to eat and drink along the road behind the beach, but it is very low key and not very commercial. Great views of the hills rising up from the sea. Life guards in summer.

This is the longest sandy beach along this stretch of coast, and as a result is also the most commercial, with plenty of seaside souvenir shops, bars and holiday apartments. Still the beach is great, and there are many attractions, children's play area's, beach activities like kayaking and wind surfing, bars etc. The bus from Elne stops near the beach, and there are pay and display car parks if you are driving. The train stops in the old town which is a short distance inland.

A tranquil place to swim and explore just beyond Port Vendres. Accessible by bus and by car (there is a car-park along the main coastal road). There is a little pebbly cove with still water and rock pools surrounded by trees. It is uncommercial with just a restaurant and a diving school. Next to this cove (going South) is restored area in the grounds of an old dynamite factory, with a museum, restaurant, conserved gardens and supervised beach which is also interesting and worth a visit. There is no charge to access the grounds and the beach, there may be a charge for any exhibitions or workshops.
