One of my personal favourites, Hoppi Dorri offers flavours of Southeast Asian and Japanese food. Yum! The design is bold and honest, and if you’re wondering, the name ‘Hoppi Dori’ apparently takes inspiration from the atmosphere found in many other of streets across Asia, where locals make traditional food for other locals. Well worth a visit if your planning an evening in Stamford (book in advance though, it’s popular!).

Stamford was the first town in the country to create a conservation area in 1967 and it has this to thank for the fact that over the subsequent half century much of its historical architectural heritage has remained intact. Just 15 mins away by car, Stamford is well worth a visit! There are many beautiful 18th and 19th Century buildings, some great independent shops as well as lots of coffee shops, bars and restaurants.

Burghley, one of the largest and grandest houses of the first Elizabethan Age. Built and mostly designed by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1555 and 1587, the main part of the House has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. There are more than 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. The lead roof extends to three-quarters of an acre, restoration and rebuilding of which began in 1983 and took nearly ten years to complete. Visitors can enjoy the Orangery restaurant, gift shop, gardens and beautiful walks around the historic parkland laid out by Capability Brown and still occupied by a herd of fallow deer. History can come alive in a single trip whether it is to enjoy a guided tour, take a dog for a walk in the park, take the children to paddle, see the teddy bear’s picnic in the gardens of surprise or take time over lunch in the Orangery.

Wandering among the ruins, with a little imagination you can delve into Fotheringhay’s chequered past. On a gloomy morning just over 400 years ago the scene was set for the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots in the Great Hall on 8 February 1587. She was brought here to stand trial for treason because the castle was set in a marshy landscape where it was felt by the authorities that the condemned Scottish queen would be more securely imprisoned. After Mary's execution the castle was abandoned, with its stones reused to build an inn in Oundle and incorporated into the nearby Castle Farm.
