The "Casa dei Tre Oci" is a twentieth-century building related to many famous names. It was designed between 1912 and 1913 by the Emilian painter Mario De Maria, who made it his new Venetian residence. He wanted to commemorate his beloved daughter Silvia, who had died a few years before: the three windows of the facade represent the three surviving members of the family of De Maria (Mario himself, his wife Emilia Voight and his son, Astolfo) while the bifora above them symbolizes the little Silvia. In this palace, after the death of De Maria, stayed and lived characters connected to the world of art, like the architect Renzo Piano. In 1970 Enrico Maria Salerno set here some scenes of the film Anonymous Venetian. Today the "Casa" is owned by Polymnia Venezia srl, a company that organizes cultural events related to 20th century art; inside are still preserved the original furnishings and many photographic and artistic materials related to the events of De Maria and the house. In one of its floors there are ogival windows with 3 huge "eyes", through which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Giudecca Canal. Hours: daily 10-19 (closed on Tuesday). At the end of this visit we recommend not to miss a walk on the Island of Giudecca and a visit to the Church of the "Redentore", built on the project of Andrea Palladio.
La Casa dei Tre Oci è un edificio del XX secolo legato a numerosi nomi illustri. Esso fu concepito tra 1912 e 1913 dal pittore emiliano Mario de Maria, che ne fece la sua nuova dimora veneziana. Volle così commemorare l'amata figlioletta Silvia, scomparsa qualche anno prima: i tre finestroni della facciata rappresentano infatti i tre membri superstiti della famiglia de Maria (lo stesso Mario, la moglie Emilia Voight e il figlio Astolfo), mentre la bifora che li sovrasta simboleggia la piccola defunta.
In questo palazzo, dopo la morte di de Maria, soggiornarono e abitarono personaggi legati al mondo dell'arte, come l'architetto Renzo Piano. Nel 1970 Enrico Maria Salerno vi ambienta alcune scene del film Anonimo veneziano.

Yes! The "ghetto" word, widespread in all languages, was born right here, from the Venetian word “geto”. In ancient times, in the early Middle Ages, in this part of the city there was an ancient foundry (a “geto” in Venetian) that was used for the "bombarde", the small cannons of Venetian ships. In 1516, for political reasons, the Republic of the Serenissima established by law that all Jews should live here; the population came mostly from Central and Eastern Europe. It was precisely because of their pronunciation that the Venetian term “geto”, was crippled in “gheto”, originating the word we use today all over the world. In the ghetto, set between the two oldest Venetian synagogues, there is also the Jewish Museum: a small but very rich museum, which was founded in 1954 by the Venetian Jewish Community. The museum can be visited at a cost of €8 and is divided into two thematic areas: the first dedicated to the Jewish holiday, the second tells the story of the Jewish ghetto and the persecution of Jews, from the origins to the concentration camps of the Second World War. By adding a few euros to the price of the ticket it is also possible to visit some of the ghetto synagogues with a guide. Inside the ghetto I recommend a stop at the Gam Gam restaurant that offers typical dishes of Jewish culture.
Ebbene sì! La parola ghetto, così diffusa in tutte le lingue, trae origine proprio da qui, dalla parola veneziana “geto”. Anticamente, nel primo medioevo, si trovava infatti in questa parte della città un’antica fonderia (un “geto” in veneziano) che serviva a forgiare le bombarde, i piccoli cannoni delle navi veneziane. Quando, per motivi politici, nel 1516 la Repubblica della Serenissima stabilì per legge che tutti gli ebrei dovessero vivere e risiedere qui, la popolazione proveniva per lo più dall’Europa Centrorientale e fu proprio a causa della loro pronuncia che il termine veneziano “geto”, venne storpiato in “gheto” (letto alla tedesca), originando il termine che oggi usiamo in tutto il mondo.
Nel campo del gheto novo, incastonato tra le due più antiche sinagoghe veneziane, si trova anche il Museo Ebraico: un piccolo, ma ricchissimo museo fondato nel 1954 dalla Comunità Ebraica veneziana. Il museo visitabile al costo di 8€ è suddiviso in due aree tematiche: la prima dedicata al ciclo delle festività ebraiche, la seconda, racconta la storia del ghetto ebraico e della persecuzione degli ebrei, dalle origini ai campi di concentramento della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, attraverso immagini e oggetti. Aggiungendo pochi euro al prezzo del biglietto è anche possibile visitare con guida alcune delle sinagoghe del ghetto.
All'interno del ghetto consiglio una tappa al ristorante Gam Gam che propone pietanze tipiche della cultura ebraica.

2882 Calle Ghetto VecchioYes! The "ghetto" word, widespread in all languages, was born right here, from the Venetian word “geto”. In ancient times, in the early Middle Ages, in this part of the city there was an ancient foundry (a “geto” in Venetian) that was used for the "bombarde", the small cannons of Venetian ships. In 1516, for political reasons, the Republic of the Serenissima established by law that all Jews should live here; the population came mostly from Central and Eastern Europe. It was precisely because of their pronunciation that the Venetian term “geto”, was crippled in “gheto”, originating the word we use today all over the world. In the ghetto, set between the two oldest Venetian synagogues, there is also the Jewish Museum: a small but very rich museum, which was founded in 1954 by the Venetian Jewish Community. The museum can be visited at a cost of €8 and is divided into two thematic areas: the first dedicated to the Jewish holiday, the second tells the story of the Jewish ghetto and the persecution of Jews, from the origins to the concentration camps of the Second World War. By adding a few euros to the price of the ticket it is also possible to visit some of the ghetto synagogues with a guide. Inside the ghetto I recommend a stop at the Gam Gam restaurant that offers typical dishes of Jewish culture.
Ebbene sì! La parola ghetto, così diffusa in tutte le lingue, trae origine proprio da qui, dalla parola veneziana “geto”. Anticamente, nel primo medioevo, si trovava infatti in questa parte della città un’antica fonderia (un “geto” in veneziano) che serviva a forgiare le bombarde, i piccoli cannoni delle navi veneziane. Quando, per motivi politici, nel 1516 la Repubblica della Serenissima stabilì per legge che tutti gli ebrei dovessero vivere e risiedere qui, la popolazione proveniva per lo più dall’Europa Centrorientale e fu proprio a causa della loro pronuncia che il termine veneziano “geto”, venne storpiato in “gheto” (letto alla tedesca), originando il termine che oggi usiamo in tutto il mondo.
Nel campo del gheto novo, incastonato tra le due più antiche sinagoghe veneziane, si trova anche il Museo Ebraico: un piccolo, ma ricchissimo museo fondato nel 1954 dalla Comunità Ebraica veneziana. Il museo visitabile al costo di 8€ è suddiviso in due aree tematiche: la prima dedicata al ciclo delle festività ebraiche, la seconda, racconta la storia del ghetto ebraico e della persecuzione degli ebrei, dalle origini ai campi di concentramento della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, attraverso immagini e oggetti. Aggiungendo pochi euro al prezzo del biglietto è anche possibile visitare con guida alcune delle sinagoghe del ghetto.
All'interno del ghetto consiglio una tappa al ristorante Gam Gam che propone pietanze tipiche della cultura ebraica.

Orson Welles shot some scenes of his Othello (1952) at the Palazzo Contarini; in another famous film with Marcello Mastroianni the protagonists spend a night with two girls here. At the beginning of 19th century Palazzo Contarini became the hotel "Il Maltese". Now it is "Corte (court) Contarini del Bovolo".
La Scala Contarini del Bovolo, facente parte di Palazzo Contarini, si trova in un angolo nascosto di Venezia, al di fuori degli itinerari turistici, all’interno di una piccola corte, vicino a Campo Manin.

The tours are customizable both as duration ( but still from a minimum of 4 hours), both as itinerary: to the most famous islands, such as Murano, Burano and Torcello, or to the less touristic islands. During the trip you can have lunch in a typical resturant on an island of the lagoon. Tours are offered either "only pilot" or "with guide".
