Restaurants in & around Horsham!

So much variety in Horsham itself - visit on a Sunday morning & it's cafe culture with the aroma of coffee, fresh bread & pastries spilling onto pavement cafes, and from market stalls. Pop back in the evening, and the bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants will be in full swing. A huge range, to suit every pocket & taste. Travel a little further for gourmet pubs, farm shop cafes with locally produced offerings, and again, a wide range of noteworthy eateries - do pass on recommendations of your favourite finds!
Vibrant a hub as it ever was, Horsham Town Hall has been transformed into the bustling Bill’s restaurant and produce store for the next chapter of it’s life at the centre of the market square. I love Bill Granger’s recipes. Sunny, healthy, relaxed food reflect his Australian roots. Although 10 months after moving into Horsham, this was the first restaurant we visited in the town. Totally taken up with hard labour in the house and garden, we hadn’t realised what a great selection of trendy eateries Horsham has – but the reality is that Bills & Waitrose have graced the cobbled streets, alongside many other great places - say no more… (Except, perhaps, it’s wise to book – our first visit, on a Wednesday night, was less than successful as we hadn’t done so – there’s a recommendation!) Food – Bill’s produce stores & restaurants showcase his sense of effortless style, his passion for simple, clean food & understated retro styling. Philosophy – Bill creates variations on easy themes – healthy and zesty. Relaxed Sunday brunches with the paper and a latte are a fab way to spend a wet morning, any day of the week :-) Decor – Vibrant a hub as it ever was, Horsham Town Hall had stood on the same site in since the C17. The present stocky building, of local Horsham Stone, dates from C19. has been adopted by the Bill’s restaurant and produce group for the next chapter of it’s life at the centre of the market square. Like the food, decor is interesting & honest. Service – Easy going, charming, usually pacy. ‘Open for’ & Price – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. Mid range price. Tips – Book. Avoid the house white. 🙂 Interesting to know – Horsham’s Old Town Hall is listed at Grade II because of it’s north facade of c1812, commissioned by the Duke of Norfolk and in an antiquarian neo-Norman style, as the Duke also favoured at Arundel Castle. Later work on the building dates to 1888. Through the barred basement windows a stroll past allows a glimpse into two surviving sets of cells in the basement which are virtually unaltered from former times.

Sophisticated, eminently interesting and different. An imaginative twist on classic style, without losing any of the Michelin rating! – Tristans is the top restaurant of the Town, Michelin rated, and often needs to be booked well in advance - worth doing ahead of your arrival, if you're a 'foodie'!

Undergoing a refurbishment, a lot of effort has been put into getting the menus and food updated. The Abinger is about 15 - 20 minutes drive towards Holmbury St Mary, but is worth a visit, and has some decent walks in the pretty countryside & woods surrounding. Abinger also host regular feature events through the year - see their website for details.

A must for foodies, alongside the more local Tristans. Book and go for the nine courses! For those with more modest appetites, there is also a five course menu - each an experience not to be missed. The atmosphere, styling of the decor as well as the food, and imaginative creative are a treat not to be missed, even if it means eating baked beans for the next month!

Hugely popular as a pit stop for cyclists, there are also good walks all around the Milk Churn in Rudgwick, around 10 - 15 minutes drive. Family owned, the Milk Churn is a wooden cabin built on the original 1952 site of dairy cows, whose offspring still now produce the milk that Sussex Charmer, one or our local cheeses, is made of. Enjoy a slice or two of Sussex Charmer, some local butter on freshly made scones, or locally produced, naturally made ice cream... what's not to like - in the sun on the terrace, or with a paper, inside on a wet day. Produce is also available to buy, so that's supper sorted, too!

Spend the afternoon at Denbies - book a vineyard tour or a session about winemaking, and have a meal in the restaurant. Basic, cafe style, but good value. There is also a farm shop on site selling local produce And of course, you must bring some English wine home - the sparkling is particularly recommended! https://www.denbies.co.uk/
