My favourite restaurants

Restaurants recommended by me This is a totally subjective recommendation. Other people might differ. As a cottage owner I had to visit all the places to know what to expect from them. We don’t really have a fine dining restaurant in Greyton. Abbey Rose They are nr. 1 on Trip advisor for Greyton. Serves traditional SA food of a good quality. (Bookings over weekends essential. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) Andre and Anita are the owners and they really try their best to accommodate customers in a polite and friendly way. Tel nr : 028 254 9470 1854 Serves great steaks and ribs, prawns and fish. Generous portions for the hungry! (Bookings over weekends essential) Mornay, the owner, is a very friendly guy without invading your space. Tel nr. : 028 254 9639 Rupert’s Bistro British flavours with a Mediterranean twist. Vegetarian friendly. It gets mixed reviews. That is also the way we experienced it. Tel nr.: 028 254 9066 Ricardo’s Piri piri A Lovely Portugese restaurant. Service is excellent and one of my favourites. Tel. : 072 126 7656 Via’s Lovely place for a breakfast and lunch. If you have a sweet tooth, their chocolate milkshakes are really good. Their cheesecake – although quite expensive – is also good Pampoen & Kaneel An exciting new restaurant highly recommended. Good food, lovely atmosphere and a very pleasant owner/chef, Jonathan. Tel.: 076 126 7482 Vanilla café If you are here in summer, you might enjoy the swimming pool in their garden. My experience is that the service is slow and some items on the menu are overprized O28 254 9453 Old Potters Inn Very popular and a jolly place. Wednesdays they have their ‘Happy Hour’ where you will meet very friendly locals. Foire Garden Center Lovely surroundings and nice for breakfast or lunch.
Easier hiking trails are the following: Where? Start at Krige Road in Greyton, Cape Overberg, Western Cape When? Daylight hours. Distance: 3km Time: +/- 1-2 hours Greyton offers the 3 kilometre Loerkop hiking Trail which will take you about 1 hour 30 minutes to complete. The route starts on the low bridge on Krige Road where you can often see kingfishers sitting on the branches above the river. Parts of the hike are steep so take care and ensure you bring water with you. On route you may be lucky enough to spot an abundance of wildlife so get your binoculars and camera at the ready as you may be lucky enough to spot antelope, Grey Reebok and blue cranes. Continue along the path and as you reach the top you will notice the spectacular views over the Riviersonderend Mountains. The native Fynbos is beautiful and ever changing with the season Lower Gobos Walk The Lower Gobos Walk is an easy walk of four kilometres that takes about an hour to complete. There is a picnic spot as part of the trail, which is a fantastic way to revel in the beauty of the area after enjoying the walk. To access this trail, take the Riviersonderend Road out of the little town of Greyton. Then, follow the river to the picnic site, where the trail begins. Maermanskloof hiking trail Start: lower end of Nerina Street at the old Cape Nature Conservation camp, Greyton Finish: lower end of Nerina Street Duration: 5 km, roughly 3 hours Fitness: moderate to difficult Our tip: remember hats and water when it is hot The Greyton Conservation Society has been hard at work, with the help of the Greyton Municipality, to carefully mark walking paths and hiking trails in and around the village. Maermanskloof hiking trail is one of these. Do not let the short duration of the hike fool you into thinking that it is easy. For it is both steep and demanding, climbing from 230m at its lowest point to 568m at its highest. But the climb is worth it. Starting at the lower end of Nerina Street it begins by way of the stone gate, and follow the jeep track right ahead of you. It will take you up and over the rise. A little later look out for the Gobos River at which you take a right onto a small path that climbs further still. Now you head out across a series of hills, tackling paths that look steep but are not as bad as they seem. The viewpoint is the highest point of the walk. From up here the views are incredible over the Riviersonderend Mountains. South of here you can now see the path that leads down into Maermanskloof valley. Follow this up the neck and down along a jeep track. On the descent you will cross another jeep track before coming to Weltevreden farmhouse. A bench a little further on affords a gentle break with views out over Greyton. A zig-zag path takes you back down through the picnic site. Gifkloof Trail The Gifkloof trail is a dog-friendly running, hiking, mountain-biking and horse-riding trail, running alongside the river in Greyton. Start the trail at the junction of lower Regent Street and Vlei Street, and walk, cycle or ride across town, where you’ll experience magic views of the Hottentots-Holland mountains, farmland and the quaint town of Greyton. Remember to pack refreshing drinks and picnic goodies, as the trail begins and ends at a gorgeous picnic spot by the river. It's a great afternoon out with little ones.

The cottage has a security alarm with armed response within minutes. Please use the alarm! Smoking allowed on the deck and garden No pets allowed. I expect guests to leave the cottage, when they depart, in a decent way as I believe that I offer a little bit more than the usual self catering places.

Lismore Estate Vineyards
One and a half hours drive from Cape Town, on the site of an old rambling farm, lies the peaceful town of Greyton. Named after Sir George Grey, twice Governor of the Cape Colony, Greyton has a picture perfect patchwork of gardens, pretty cottages, and many beautifully restored buildings. A traveler coming suddenly upon Greyton, in its cradle of mountains, after a journey through the rolling wheat fields of the Overberg, might be forgiven if he thinks he has discovered another Brigadoon, that mythical village lost in another century. Visitors to Greyton are enchanted with its true country atmosphere and fall instantly under the village's spell. The reward is to share Greyton lifestyle in a friendly and relaxed experience. In the tradition of other towns in the region, Greyton was first a farm, Weltevreden. In 1846, Weltevreden was bought by Herbert Vigne. Greyton today is a friendly, peaceful hamlet surrounded by mountains and farmlands. Within the village, old traditions still prevail, such as, thatched cottages and restored buildings that stand amidst beautiful gardens and oak-lined streets. Ducks frolic in the "leiwater" canals and donkey carts, cows and horses are part of the daily scenes. Summer days are hot and balmy, whilst winter offers snow-capped mountain peaks. The town boasts a number of historical buildings such as The Post House, Greyton Lodge, St. Andrews Church, The Moravian Church, and many restored cottages. There is also an old Cape Highway/historic wagon route via Lindeshof to Riviersonderend, where oak and poplar trees indicate overnight stops for wagons. Greyton is a treasure and craft hunters dream. It is home to a number of artists and craft persons and many of them operate an open house policy. The Saturday Market (20m from Marina Cottage) is for many a highlight. From 10:00 - 12:00
