Stadsdelsguiden

Gamla Stan (the Old Town), is the original Stockholm dating back to the 13th century. Here, ornate 17th-century preserved houses line narrow cobbled streets that splinter off into alley ways heading in all directions. Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan are the district’s main streets. The city wall that once surrounded the city ran inside these streets along what is now Prästgatan. In the middle of Gamla Stan is Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm. Stortorget is the central point from which runs Köpmangatan, the oldest street in Stockholm, which was mentioned as early as the fourteenth century. Mårten Trotzigs gränd (Mårten Trotzigs alley) is hard to find. It’s the narrowest alley in Gamla Stan, only 90 centimeters wide at its narrowest point.

"Hej!" or "Hej, hej"

All Swedes speaks fairly good English, but if you want to say hello or goodbye like a local, you can say: ‘hej’ or ‘hej hej’ (where the ‘j’ is pronounced like an English ’y’). ’Tack’ means both thank you and please, so it’s easy to be polite.

public transportation

The SL card (SL = Stockholm transport system) is valid on pretty much any transport, including the tube, busses and some of the ferries that run between the inner-city islands. In the winter season, you can even use an SL ticket on ferries to the archipelago. The best value for money is a 72-hour or 7-day ticket. Buy it in your phone with the SL-app, or a place with a blue and white SL flag outside (ex. 7-Eleven).
