My Favorite Restaurants around the Twin Cities

Saturday night prime rib dinner for 10.99 queen size or 14.99 king size is a great bargain and great food. This place is a bar and restaurant so if they're serving dinner, you can bring your kids and sit in a booth. Clientele is diverse and the atmosphere is fun.

Broadway Pizza has delivery or you can eat in. It's also a bar and has karaoke. Neighborhood joint that is nothing fancy but is known for good pizza using the fresh meat from the local Hackenmueller's butcher in downtown Robbinsdale.

Classic diner food popular with locals. Service is friendly, Rhonda remembers the orders of regulars. I've only gone for breakfast, get there before 9:30 on weekends if you want a leisurely pace. Late weekend mornings are full and busy. Prices are very reasonable for the Twin Cities and portions are hefty. Try the hearty breakfast if you're starving. Eggs Benedict or Polish scrambler are also good.

Silly name for a Mexican restaurant serving authentic, made to order, quick meals. Wait in line, pick which meats and toppings you want for tacos, burritos. There are also full plate meals with rice and beans. Try the alambre or tortas and french fries if really hungry. Kids may like the sopes if they want to try something a little different than tacos. Beverages include Mexican pops like Jarritos, Jumex and aguas frescas like horchata and jamaica. For a quick, affordable meal, this is a good spot. Located on Central Avenue in NE Minneapolis, it is about 4 miles from Cozy Nest and not far from downtown.

Is it 10 pm and you're hungry? Located on E. Lake Street off the Hiawatha rail line, this is one of the few places open until 11 pm Wednesday-Saturday and 10 pm on Sunday and Monday. Prices are affordable, portions are large. Typical genuine Mexican fast food. If you're in West Saint Paul, try their other branch, open 11 AM -10 PM.

Serving Cantonese and seafood in Dinkytown near the University of Minnesota Shuang Cheng is popular with Chinese and Americans. They have a white board with specials written in English and Chinese that typically will list some market priced fish, duck and heaping plates of green vegetables. Not your ordinary Chinese food, delicious, authentic and reasonably priced.

Ehtiopian coffeeshop run by Gedam and her family. Tucked into a small suburban strip mall off County Road E2 from I-35W. If you like mom and pop coffee shops, this one has excellent Ethiopian coffee and you can buy whole bags of beans too. We first started visiting over a decade ago.

Holy Land is a welcoming place for all. There's a large Middle Eastern grocery attached to the fast service restaurant. This is not a fancy place but the food is exceptional with high quality ingredients that can accommodate most people, even those who have dietary restrictions either for religious or health reasons. It's also great for people watching.

Good Thai food open for lunch and dinner. Ideal when you have an hour for lunch and want a quick date. Clean, modern Thai decor is pleasant but not over the top. Located a little south of downtown Saint Paul on west 7th Street in a neighborhood with lots of fun shops.

Best place for kolachi and blood sausage. Been around forever. For Eastern European pastries and sausage, there is no place better. You can eat in but a lot of people get food to take and eat at home. This is just over the river from downtown.

It's not easy to find Brazilian food in the Twin Cities. Hopkins is a western suburb of Minneapolis with a small, quaint downtown from when this was still a separate town from the Twin Cities metro area. Samba is run by Brazilians, plays Brazilian music, and serves high quality, typical Brazilian meals. This is a mid priced restaurant. Expect to pay $25-$35 a person if you don't skimp.

Real Carribean food. In the middle of winter, it's nice to come eat West Indian food that reminds one of somewhere tropical. This is a small restaurant with made to order food so expect to wait for your meal. It will arrive hot and fresh. Good place if you want to please both a vegetarian and a meat eater. Be aware it closes mid afternoon between lunch and dinner from 2-5 p.m.

As of winter 2020, closed until spring. Strangely ironic 1980's American preppy decor inside and an outdoor functional Ferris wheel located near the Mississippi River in NE Minneapolis on Lowry Avenue. If you're staying in town a while, there's a cheap monthly membership. Try the deviled eggs and a drink if you aren't hungry enough for a full meal. Brunch is $16.95 and includes bottomless Mimosas and Bloody Mary's.

Both a tiki bar and a restaurant, this place is very popular. They serve alcoholic drinks in tiki glasses you can buy to take home. Winter clothing

Minnesota winters range from normal to subarctic in temperature so if you are travelling this time of year, it is essential to bring layers and proper winter clothes that include a heavy winter jacket, hat, scarf, mittens/gloves and boots. If you are from the south or somewhere without winter, you will most likely want to pack long underwear.
