Fun and Unique Things to Do

Guide books will tell you all that there is to do in the area, but how do you choose? Here is a curated guide to my favorite places and things to do in the area.
If you like tea, making a trip to the Harney and Son’s tasting room is a must. Millerton has some nice shops and a lovely bike trail adjacent to Harney and Sons.

If you like modern and diversified genres of art, this is a really cool space. Located in a former elementary school, this is one of the freshest art galleries or museums I have ever visited. It is only open on Saturdays – call ahead to make sure they are open.

While it is fun to browse the antique stores of Hudson, they are also quite expensive. For real bargains, head to Meisner’s on Saturday night. Prices are normally 1/10th to ½ than they are in Hudson. Be sure to CAREFULLY inspect what you want to bid on ahead of time (during the week or right before the Saturday night auction) as everything is sold as is. If you see something you really like but can’t make the auction, phone bids are accepted. Check out items for sale on their website.

Go to any local party and you’ll often see a small wheel of cheese that on the surface looks like brie. Inside, the triple cream cheese is hands down the best soft cheese I have ever had. Every time I see cheese maker Will, I ask him “What makes your cheese taste so good?” He’ll insist that it is the Jersey cream from a local family dairy farm but I suspect it is the way he makes it. They have a self-serve store at their location at 473 State Route 43 in Stephentown (usually open M-Th 10-4) or at the New Lebanon farmer’s market on. You can purchase their cheese there for $10 a wheel. Don’t worry if you can’t make those hours; you can also find it at the Old Chatham Country Store which is just 4 miles away. If you wait until you get back to the city, you may be paying (if you can find it) $25 or more. They are now making ricotta.

a 45 minute round trip hike to the top of the mountain with views of the Catskills and Berkshires and blueberry picking. On the way back, drive down East Hill Road and catch the poet’s trail at the Edna St. Vincent Millay Colony. (1/2 hour driving distance) Directions: From the intersection of Route 203 and 66 in Chatham, head east about 8 miles to the end of Route 203 towards Austerlitz. Take a left onto Route 22. Go 2.7 miles and take a right onto East Hill Road. At 564 East Hill Road, Austerlitz, you will see the trail head. For a shorter hike, go beyond that and take an immediate left onto a dirt road. Follow that up for about a mile. On your left you’ll see an area for 2-3 cars to park and a yellow barrier crossing the logging road (in the woods on your left). Park and follow the logging road to the top of the mountain. On your way back, take a left onto East Hill Road and you’ll come to the Edna St. Vincent Millay Colony. There is a lovely short “poet’s walk” that will be on your right. East Hill Road loops back to Route 22.
