Sights around Brisbane and Local eats

Brisbane is a casual kind of city, we enjoy great weather nearly all year round so we like to enjoy the outdoors. Here are some places for you to explore while you're with us and some places where you'll find something to eat along the way.
Southbank offers something for everyone any time of the day or evening. During the day it offers great pools for swimming - including a man made beach overlooking the city (where else would you find that?), free bbq's for picnics, cafes and coffee shops, green spaces to sit and relax or walk across the road to the cultural precinct with its Art Galleries, Entertainment venues, Museum and State Library. On weekends in the evening it's a magic place filled with music, street markets and restaurants. Our favourite way of getting there are by bus on the nearby Southeast Busway. Brisbane has an unusual form of transport, our famous Catamaran Ferry boats called CITY CATS. A ride on a citycat is especially nice in the evening as the sun is setting and you can hop on one at Southbank and take a ride up or down river.

It's free! About 10 mins drive from us you'll find the Daisy Hill Koala Centre. This conservation and rehabilitation centre cares for wildlife that have been injured and informs the community of the koala's life cycle and dangers to their habitat. Rangers give informative talks regularly each day. You'll get to see koalas but not hold them. Each evening after 4pm you may get to see wallabies feeding on the grassy areas in the park. BBQ's and picnic areas are readily available.

Great views of the city and surrounding areas from this high point in Brisbane's leafy suburb of Mt Coot-tha. Bush walking is a highlight in this area if you like a few hills. The botanical gardens and planetarium at the foot of Mt Coot-tha are filled with unusual plants, water features and some wildlife.

Springbrook National Park is filled with waterfalls, beautiful scenery, native animals and bush walks. Bush walking tracks range from easy to very challenging so it's advisable to take notice of the signs or ask someone and stay on track. Our recommendations are Purlingbrook Falls, 1 hour from us, with a spectacular waterfall that you can see from the top of the walk or you can descend into the gorge and reach the bottom of the falls which is about a 5km track down and back up. If you don't want the challenge and want an easy walk go to 'Best of all lookout' which is only about another 10 mins further along the road. As you walk along this track you'll see ancient Antarctic Beech trees, the beautiful cool temperate rainforest which opens up to a grand vista of the remains of a long extinct volcanic crater. In the afternoons watch out for little wallabies called pademelons that graze on the grassy sides of the roadsides nearby.

Filled with bush walks and waterfalls Tamborine Mountain is a favourite place for tourists and locals. On hot summery days many people come to enjoy the cooler temperatures, enjoy the beautiful scenery to the Gold Coast or the greenery of the west. Hang gliders make the most of the elevation and soar off like birds from the side of the mountain while other visitors walk the main street of town called Gallery Row. This street is filled with art, craft, clocks and cafes which makes it a very pleasant place to spend the day.

The best beaches in the world...I'm not kidding and they get better as you go further south. Surfers Paradise is known the world over, it's filled with everything the tourist is looking for with it's beaches and bars but if you're looking for something really special head further south to the beaches that only the locals go to. We recommend Burleigh Heads, Tallebudgera, Currumbin, Kirra, Coolangatta and the Greenmount area. It's quieter, less commercial and you'll get a lot of more beach to yourself.

The best Australian zoo around. It's clean, exciting and full of happy animals. You'll get to pat and feed kangaroos and wallabies. Touch or hold Koalas, see Echidnas, Wombats, Platypus, Tasmanian Devils plus a whole range of Australian reptiles. Australia Zoo also has non indigenous animals on display as well. Australia Zoo is about 1.5 hours from us but well worth the trip...by car.
