Sliding Rock

Sliding Rock is a 60 foot mountain water slide that ends in an 8 foot deep pool of water. Nearly 11,000 gallons of water per minute power this natural wonder. Onlookers can watch the fun from two observation platforms. The site is staffed from Memorial Day to Labor Day and is open 7 days a week. This area is heavily used between the hours of 12 noon and 4 pm, so please come early. After Labor Day weekend, it is staffed Saturdays and Sundays only from 10am-6pm until October 28th. 7851 Pisgah Hwy Pisgah Forest, NC 28768

Sliding Rock is a 60 foot mountain water slide that ends in an 8 foot deep pool of water. Nearly 11,000 gallons of water per minute power this natural wonder. Onlookers can watch the fun from two observation platforms. The site is staffed from Memorial Day to Labor Day and is open 7 days a week. Devil's Courthouse Overlook

Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 422.8 Devil’s Courthouse, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, presides over some of the most spectacular views in the Blue Ridge Mountains. From the top of Devil’s Courthouse at 5,720 feet, visitors can see into South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee in a 360-degree panorama. Devil’s Courthouse may have received its name because of the sinister aspect of the rock formation, or because, as legend holds, the devil held court in the cave that lies beneath the rock. In Cherokee lore, this cave is the private dancing chamber and dwelling place of the slant-eyed giant, Judaculla. Devil’s Courthouse provides habitat for a variety of rare, high-altitude plants. Some of these alpine species may be remnants from the last glacial period. Hawks, ravens, vultures, eagles, and peregrine falcons ride the hot air currents that rise from the valley.

Visitors can reach the summit on a 1.5 mile, self-guided loop trail that passes through a spruce-fir forest. The term “balsam” is commonly applied to Fraser fir and red spruce, the scent of which permeates the fresh air on the mountain. Two varieties of spruce grow at Richland Balsam: “he-balsam” has rough bark and prickly needles like a man’s beard and “she-balsam” has smooth barked fir with shiny flat needles. Other plants such as blackberry and elderberry grow where the firs have been knocked over by windstorms, opening the forest floor to sunlight. We recommend stopping at this overlook for a picture in front of both the incredible view and the large sign located here signifying the relevance of this spot.

Festival of Lights – Every winter, the streets of Canton are filled with the glow of thousands of holiday lights in celebration of the season. Christmas Parade – This nighttime holiday parade includes an appearance from Santa, as well as the sights, sounds and spirit of this iconic season. Colonial Theatre – This historic theater was built in 1932, renovated in 1992 and again in 2006. Stop by and enjoy concerts, movies and special events throughout the year. This is also where hometown favorite Balsam Range performs their annual winter concert. Locust Fields Cemetery – One of the oldest and most historic cemeteries in Haywood County, this cemetery’s involvement during the Civil War has earned it a marker on the North Carolina Civil War Trail. The Imperial and Southern Porch – This historic, Victorian-style building was built in the late 1800s and offers visitors dining, live music and a storied history involving a trap door in the dining area. Pigeon River – Flowing directly through downtown Canton, this waterway allows visitors to enjoy numerous recreational activities, including fishing, kayaking, canoeing and tubing.
