Famous for its black dirt, a rich soil that was the result of constant flooding during the retreat of glaciers during the last ice age, about 12,000 years ago. Black dirt onions grow here.
Check out the Black dirt distillery and pine island brewery.

1.5-mile Pochuck Boardwalk and 110-foot long wooden suspension bridge elevate this section of the Appalachian Trail over what was once a prehistoric lake between the Pochuck and Wawayanda Mountains in northern New Jersey.
Tip--parking fills up quickly on the weekend, get there early.
Tip-At the end of the trail, walk over to Stairway to Heaven, is a series of rock slab steps steeply switch-backing up Wawayanda Mountain.
