Legend dates the creation of Mexico City to the 14th century, when the nomadic Aztecs founded a permanent capital they called Tenochtitlán on the precise spot that a devine sign had revealed to them. The story goes that the god Huitzilopochtli instructed them to build a great city at the place where they saw a serpent being devoured by an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus growing out of a rock, in the middle of a rock. Centro Histórico is comprised of 35 blocks that contain iconic squares and buildings such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, The National Palace, the Museo del Templo Mayor and archeological excavations of the main temple of Tenochtitlán.

Underneath the monument is a small museum devoted to the Revolution.
