Absolutely gorgeous views of the Ko'olaus. Get there early just before they open for dinner at 4:30 to snag a prime seat along the balcony overlooking the Haiku gardens and the majestic Ko'olaus. Food is pricey, but excellent. Recommend the Prime Rib, teriyaki steak, and any seafood dish.

Great local burger chain. Comparable to a Five Guys, but even better IMO. Try the Umami fries and the Teddy's sauce.

Just down the road from our house, Mike's Huli Chicken is a great food truck offering local favorites like Huli Chicken (a local rotisserie style) and Garlic Shrimp. It has been featured on the Food network, and deservedly so.

Our favorite pizzeria is within walking distance from our favorite beach in the area. Reasonable prices (sold by the slice, or whole pie) great Boston-style pizza just off of Kailua beach. Recommend the pepperoni, garlic and spinach.

Parks & Nature

Mokoli'i - better known as Chinaman's Hat - is a small island located just across from Kualoa regional park at the north end of Kaneohe Bay. It can be seen from the lanai of our home. One of our favorite activities is to kayak or even wade (at low tide) across from the beach park to the small island, where you can take in breathtaking views of Kaneohe bay and the Ko'olau mountains. Around the back side of the island is a small beach and some really neat tide pools. Intrepid visitors can also climb to the top of the island and enjoy incredible 360 degree views. If you're interested in going out to the island, let us know and we can recommend a plan of attack!

Paved hiking trail, easy enough for hikers of all skill levels. Can even push a stroller! Best view on Oahu for a paved hike. Check out the historic lighthouse from the top, or catch a sunset.

Iconic hiking trail and waterfall in Manoa. Fairly easy, but can be quite muddy if it's been raining, which is when you want to go because duh, it's a waterfall! :D Try to go on a weekday if possible as it can get a bit crowded on weekends and holidays.

Shark's Cove offers great snorkeling in the summer months (in winter the surf is usually too high to be safe). There is also an enormous tide pool where you can wade among coral and tropical fish - basically like snorkeling but without the swimming. This is an awesome place for young kids, who will love splashing in the shallow water, collecting hermit crabs and watching the fish swim.

The North Shore's famous Turtle Bay resort has a lovely little cove which is publicly accessible (in fact, ALL Hawaiian beaches are public access). This bay offers calm, protected waters and is great for small children to play on a beach with minimal waves. There is also some great snorkeling to be had here as well! Pull into Turtle Bay resort and look for Public Parking on the right.

Iconic Waimea Bay is famous for surfing in the winter, and in the summer has some really cool rock formations perfect for cliff jumping. It's also a perfect place to view a sunset in the summer months. Here's me jumping off the cliffs at sunset last year: https://www.instagram.com/p/BH6TL7aj7So/

Best snorkeling on Oahu. Very, very, very popular. Avoid on weekends and holidays! Make sure to come around midday to get the best visibility as the sun is overhead. If you get here and the parking lot is full, you can either drive back and forth for a while until it opens again, or park down the hill off of Nawiliwili St and walk up the hill. It's not ideal, but it can be done. There is a $7 charge for non-residents and a 10 minute orientation video. Both well worth it.

Our go-to beach. Traffic in Kailua can be a bit tough during rush hour, but Kailua beach and neighboring Lanikai are two of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu. The sand is perfectly white and incredibly fine. It feels - and looks - like walking in powdered sugar. Kailua is also the best spot on Oahu for kite-surfing, which is fun to watch.

Awesome, very popular Lanikai pillbox hike. This hike is typically very dry (unlike most hikes on Oahu), and offers spectacular views of the Koolaus, Lanikai Beach, and the Mokulua ("the Moks"), two famous small islands a mile off of Lanikai beach. This hike is easy and short, with awesome views almost the entire way. Park along the street along Kaelepulu or Alapapa and make sure to be quiet and courteous if you are hiking early in the morning to catch the sunrise.

The Pali Lookout, located off of the Pali Highway (one of three highways that cross the Ko'olaus which separate windward from leeward Oahu) is well worth stopping at for the history as well as the incredible view of windward Oahu. The winds can be incredibly powerful, and have even knocked our 2 year old over before.

A moderately difficult nearby trail that runs up the back side of the hill our home sits on. There are some old WWII pillboxes at the top, and some of the best unobstructed views of Kaneohe Bay to be found. (You can also spot our house from the top!) Gets very, very muddy when it's been raining.

Better known as "Eternity Beach" after the film "From Here to Eternity" which was filmed there. Gorgeous, tiny beach nestled in a cove surrounded by a beautiful rocky shoreline. Park at the Halona Blow Hole lookout and hike down to the beach. ***Note that this beach can become very unsafe during times of high tide, so please use discretion and read about the safety concerns before visiting!***
