Find out the history of this quant place while you are there, as a family we used to buy veggies for Christmas dinner at the garden gate from the old gardener before it was all renovated and made into a public space.

Old Sarum is the site of the original Cathedral before Salisbury was built so is very old and oozing with history, part of the English Heritage Group, you can buy a combined ticket for Old Sarum and Stonehenge and catch the tour bus from the station just a 10 minute walk from Gecko cottage.

Salisbury Cathedral is famous for the tallest medieval spire in Europe, if you have the energy and good knees you can climb it with a tour guide, in spring you might see the fledgling kestrels that nest up there every year.

Restaurant provides light meals with outdoor undercover eating space provided. Also scenic walks nearby. Car needed to get there. 25 minute drive from Salisbury. Entrance fee charged.

You can take a number 2 bus from top of Skew Bridge road and change at Long Street in Devizes to the 49, it will take around 1 hour 40 minutes an takes your through some pretty villages with regular stops along the way if you want to jump on and off to look around. The famous flight of locks the Caen Hill Locks on the Kennet and Avon canal at Devizes is with visiting.
