Every guidebook will tell you to go stand in line at Ramen Tatsu-ya for 20 minutes. Michi Ramen is delicious, has so many more choices, highly customizable ramen bowls. SO savory and fresh. Comfort food when mashed potatoes are not going to cut it.

This place has amazing Southern-inspired, but not limited dishes, from finger food appetizers to delicious entrees, and the most charming and delicious cocktails. Great happy hour. A good reason to get down to Mueller an hour before taking in a movie at the Alamo!

This place is inexpensive for a solid Mexican sit-down place with a full bar and really generous plates. If you get there during or just after happy hour, you will not have a quiet, tranquil meal, but the waiters are competent, the food is fresh and consistently delicious.

For many years, Fonda's has been considered one of the finest Interior Mexican restaurants in North America. Tuesday is all night happy hour - good luck finding a seat (at the bar or on their beautiful indoor patio), but anytime you can make HH at Fonda's is a victory. If you stay for dinner and are a carnivore, I highly recommend the carne asada.

OH my dear ever loving Ceiling Cat, am I glad this place exists. I have lived in Austin for 19 years and this is the first legit bagel place we've ever had. LOOK AT THIS BAGEL! LOOK AT IT! I could eat six. I put myself through college getting up in the darkness of the shadowy realm to bake bagels for a chain and someone brought these into work one day. I took one look at them and, like a robot programmed with a six word vocabulary, could only stare and exclaim: "CORRECT!" as soon as I saw them. I think I ate 2 and a half that day. Thank you, nervous little Charlie. p.s. be prepared for the line to wrap around the building.

Take a break from the eternal TacoDeli vs Torchy's debate and just grab some rockin' inventions from Tyson. He's aight. Not too keen on their sour cream, but I dig that they served three taco plates and also plain old crisy beef tacos. A nice break from the battle over how many heart-stopping ingredients can fit in a tortilla vs what is the right sauce for did I get the right meat for this I don't know is corn better what do you like. Tyson's got super fresh ingredients and great queso. He may not knock out the top two, but he turtle-shelled Taco Shack right out of the game in my book.

I love the understated elegance of this place. It's so modern and unassuming that it feels like attention is just being paid to delivering a great dining experience. The menu, primarily Italian, is uncomplicated; varied and interesting enough to cause some indecisiveness, but it never seems like it's trying too hard to be inventive. I would take a client or a date here if I wanted them to have a wonderful meal without thinking about it too much. Great for a gathering of friends or family.

Solid drinks and at least one feature sets these places apart.

The place itself is actually not pretentious, considering the fantastic craft cocktails and Turner Classic Movies on the TV. If Andi from Pretty In Pink got a job bartending in college, it would be someplace like this.

Most charming dive bar ever. I am not going to describe it, and I suggest you go in without looking up any information about it. A memorable stop for anyone who isn't interested in wandering in and out of bars on Sixth Street or looking for a more upscale gastropub experience. Lala's as one of a trinity of bars on Burnet Road that has been around long before Allendale was such a hopping neighborhood, each with its own very unique personality - the other two being Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon, and what is now called The Aristocrat - formerly the Poodle Dog Lounge.

Gastropubs

Great food and drinks. Austin is beginning to grow weary of any venue that lacks in either category.
First, a warning. It's huge, and people are not afraid to meet in large groups with all their kids in tow on a Saturday night at 7 pm. But the food is worth it, especially if you want some delicious eats while you pre-game. It's not table-served, but the selection of beer, mead, and wine is worth it. Pairings are suggested; the staff is knowledgeable, and the flavors they put together are really worth the sound level. I haven't tried a late weeknight; it could be a totally different experience, crowd-wise, but I recommend the food no matter what. Right next to the Blue Genie on Airport Blvd.

It's a coffee shop; it's breakfast, lunch, dinner, happy hour (beer and wine). It's a smaller menu of great breakfast, appetizer, salad, and main items (burgers to die, including the Impossible!) with plenty of seating. The counter seating against the wall has outlets for your laptop, or there are tables for parties of four or more. Live music happens in the evenings.

Coffee shops and cafes

Ohhh Austin. You nitro-brewed cold zippy tease. Looking at me all cross-eyed when I order black coffee. Never change.
Another coffee shop with a small menu of good food and a cocktail bar. This place has live shows at night or sometimes just open mics. My favorite sandwich (I always get them as wraps) is the Kickin' Chicken - but heat advisory - it's a habanero chicken salad, not for everyone. Fantastic coffee - and if you go in the morning, get a taco!

Because violet lattes and amazing tacos. If they don't have the tacos you want, turn right around with your coffee and cross the street to Mi Madre's. Their menu is off the chain.

Entertainment

The Alamo Drafthouse theater is my favorite thing about Austin, hands down. There are 6 locations now, and it's worth going downtown to the Ritz for, say, a Master Pancake show, or down to South Lamar - officially named the Bong Joon Ho Cinema to honor the South Korean filmmaker - but it's not about the Alamo location, it's about the experience. Mueller is a nice location and a five minute car ride from the house. A great place to grab a burger while you watch a good movie. Just don't arrive late, and they are dead serious about their no talking policy! It's the best! A must for film buffs.
