Years ago, when San Antonio was a backwater burg, lawyers and their ilk liked to get away from the stress and strain of negotiating cattle-rustling claims by grabbing a refreshing adult beverage with their clients and colleagues - and, the Esquire was more than happy to assist them. Dark and mysterious, like the cattle-rustlers, the Esquire was the perfect shadowy spot for secret negotiations, and its proximity to the San Antonio River perfect, in case those negotiations went awry. Being uber-patriotic, San Antonio's civic community turned it into a park and slapped Teddy's name on it. Today, a pool replaces much of the sylvan and picnic tables stand in place of the caissons, but it's definitely a park and Teddy would probably love all the big sticks....
