Buenos Aires isn’t known for pizza, but with a restaurant like Filo, it certainly should be. Filo is a great lunch spot in Retiro and a safe choice if you are traveling with children. The most exciting thing on the menu is the calzone.

El Mirasol is a traditional Argentine steakhouse. Dining here is about relaxation and slow enjoyment: make sure to take advantage of the huge selection of Argentine wines to go with your meal. If you aren’t a beef eater, there are plenty of chicken, lamb, pig, and vegetarian options. Save some room for dessert – the Copa “La Recova” is a dulce de leche sundae with hot chocolate sauce.

El Federal screams trendy, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The staff is friendly and warm, and will be happy to answer your questions about any of Argentina’s traditional dishes. El Federal is committed to serving each guest a selection of traditional dishes – in fact, we recommend trying their preset menu ‘Argentina en 6 pasos.’ You’ll be served six small dishes, each of which are inspired by a different region of Argentina.

Florida Garden might appear to be just another cafe, but in fact it’s quite historically significant – or at least that’s the claim. According to the owners, writers like Jorge Luis Borges would come to the cafe and have a coffee and pastry while they wrote. Whether or not that is true, the cafe is in a beautiful Belle Epoque building and remains a prime location for a quick coffee and pastry while walking on Florida Street.

It seems that breakfast in Argentina is most often served by the French, and at Croque Madame Cafe that is not something to complain about. This French restaurant serves the typical Buenos Aires breakfast fare, which consists of a cup of coffee with a pastry or two, but they also serve several variations on the croque madame sandwich. For those from cultures where breakfast is a big affair, eating one of these fancy ham egg and cheese sandwiches will satisfy your hunger until lunchtime.

serving pretty much all day long, lunch and dinner focused on Italian food - particularly pastas - in fact, they're calling it a "pasta bar". The "they" behind this light, airy space are the owners who are also behind Sottovoce, El Burladero, Fervor, and Sexto - some of my favorite spots in town for different cuisines. Not surprisingly, it's well run, very professional, and very attentive.
