Get startedAirbnb is partnering with Agritourism NZ to highlight the huge potential of farm stays across the country. In fact, in 2021, our data showed that ‘farm stay’ was the most booked Airbnb category in New Zealand.

Meet rural Hosts on Airbnb
Garry, Twizel, South Island – Winner of the Airbnb Host Award for Best Nature Stay
“The town has about 12,000 people and a lot of us are involved in one way or another with the tourism industry, whether it be supplying the salmon from the local salmon farms, or Airbnb or other accommodation, tourism is a big part of the town. We never realised that not everyone can see the stars. We just took it for granted, but having spoken to guests that have come here, they are blown away by the stars, the satellites that they can see and the surroundings. You can see for miles. You can hear people talking two kilometres away with the right wind! People are amazed at the scenery, the quietness, and the relaxed nature of how Kiwis deal with overseas visitors.”

Helen, Nelson, South Island
“We started hosting to meet new people and supplement our income. It has been a great opportunity for us to open up our home and share this part of New Zealand with our guests. Although our accommodation is small, we have created a space that is cosy and welcoming. I enjoy making homemade jam for our guests and getting to meet people from all over the world. My place shows you can create a space that feels welcoming without a large financial outlay. Much of the work I did myself, sourcing materials and furniture from charity shops and the recycling centre as well as new items. I have tried to provide the extra touches, that for a minimal cost makes my guests feel that I have thought about their needs. You don't have to start big, it can be a growing, evolving space as finances allow.“

New Zealand Agritourism Roadshows
The Airbnb team in New Zealand has travelled across the country to deliver workshops in Te Anau and Christchurch, introducing local communities to share the benefits of hosting.
These events provide an opportunity to hear many wonderful examples of Hosts doing something different with their farm, to gather ideas and to build a community of peers. Your questions answered
